31st December At Langold Lake the ringtail Hen Harrier showed very well this morning, and at dusk, plus several Green Woodpecker, c100 Pink-footed Geese >W & Cormorant over. 30th December Hen Harrier showed well at Langold Lake again over and round the pit top, 11:30 ish. Also 3 Kestrel in same area. 29th December At Langold Lake today were 53 Gadwall, 23 Tufted Duck, 4 Pochard, 30 Siskin and Hen Harrier showed well. 28th December x2 Short-eared Owl at Thurcroft Pit Top this morning, possibly 3 (at least 5 seen several weeks ago), plus 2 Common Buzzard, 3 Kestrel and a pair of Stonechat. 1000 Golden Plover at Axle Lane. 26th December At Langold Lake were 24 Gadwall a f Shoveler , plus a flock of about 40 Siskin around the 2nd lake. 24th December Common Buzzard and a pair of Stonechat at Carr 23rd December At Carr a Barn Owl hunting by Ramper Road and Little Owl calling. 22nd December At Kiveton pit Top today 5 Mute Swan on the fish ponds, and a f Stonechat feeding on the top near the scrape. 19th December Hen Harrier (1st year/ female) reported again from Langold Pit Top (Per BirdGuides) this afternoon. 17th December
Barn Owl seen
at 08:00 hunting over Lindrick Golf Course in the vicinity of the 8th
green. The Greenkeeper has seen the bird virtually every day at this
time and in this area over the past 2 weeks. At Langold Lake today were
56 Mallard, 122 Coot, 11 Tufted Duck,
28 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 2 Mute Swan,
13 Moorhen, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little
Grebe & 3 Nuthatch. At Carlton Lake were 18
Mallard and nearby at Carlton in Lindrick, on Red Lane
were c20 Yellowhammer. 16th December At Langold Lake today were 38 Gadwall, 122 Coot, 64 Mallard, single Great Crested Grebe and Little Grebe, 30 Goldfinch, 70 Siskin and a Green Woodpecker. Late evening at Dinnington Marsh were a pair of Tawny Owls, Little Owl, Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. 15th December At Kiveton Pit Top today were 3 Stonechat (2 f & 1 m). 13th December At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were 2 Cormorant >W. At Lindrick Dale 1 m Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Grey Wagtail & c25 Mallard on the ponds. In Anston Stones Wood a flock of 8 Yellowhammer feeding on the northern side of the wood. 12th December At Kiveton Pit Top were 11 Cormorant >W, later 2 >E, 3 Mute Swan on Pit Top water, 1 m& 1 f Stonechat also on the Pit Top. 10th December A Woodpigeon reported, nesting near Alcove Plantation! 9th December Ringtail Hen Harrier showed well this afternoon at Langold Pit Top. 8th December At Langold Lake in the rain this afternoon were; 60 Coot, single Cormorant, 51 Tufted Duck, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 37 Mallard, 16 Moorhen, single m Pochard, 31 Gadwall, 35 Canada Geese, Mute Swan, single f Wigeon & Shoveler. 4th December
At Langold
Lake the Hen Harrier still present around the Pit Top
today was mobbed by both a Kestrel & Sparrowhawk
at the same time. On the lake were 34 Mallard,
87 Coot, 51 Tufted Duck, 15 Moorhen,
19 Gadwall, 2 m Pochard, 1 f Shoveler,
3 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Cormorant, c100
Black-headed Gull & 3 Common Gull.
On Carlton Lake were 14 Mallard. At Brown Bailey's Pond
were 13 Coot, 18 Canada Geese, 2 Great
Crested Grebe & 7 Tufted Duck. 2nd December Short-eared Owl briefly again in rough fields between Carr and railway bridge @15:30, in between rain showers. 29th November
At Carr, a Short-eared Owl quartering fields to the right
of the winding road leading from Carr Village towards Bramley, plus
2 Kestrel, 8 Magpie, 12 Blackbird
& c30 Pheasant. 28th November Ringtail Hen Harrier still at Langold Pit Top, between Langold Lake & the Pit Top. Barn Owl also in the area. Short-eared Owl reported from the Carr area. At Kiveton Pit Top were c100 Fieldfare, 2 Kestrel, 4 Cormorant circling then >W, c75 Black-headed Gull & 2 Mute Swan on the water. 25th November Ringtail Hen Harrier again at Langold Pit Top, on south side at at 08:40. At Axle Lane 3500 Golden Plover. At Brampton Common were 4 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Green Sandpiper . At Langold Pit Top were 3 Common Buzzard,3 Kestrel,Sparrowhawk and the ringtail Hen Harrier again. 24th November Ringtail Hen Harrier again at Langold Pit Top at 07:45, mobbed by Rooks, then on south side of Pit Top at 08:45. At Langold Lake were 13 Gadwall, 49 Tufted Duck, Shoveler, Pochard, 5 Wigeon, 4 Great Crested Grebe & 20 Siskin. 23rd November Hen Harrier (ringtail) quartering fields on North side of Langold Pit Top, between Langold Lake & Pit Top. The wader scrape is filling up 17th November At Carlton Lake today were 2 Cormorant & 6 Goosander. At Langold Lake were 3 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Wigeon, 46 Mallard, 1 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 36 Tufted Duck, 15 Moorhen, 107 Coot, 300 Black-headed Gull & 2 Common Gull. 16th November
At Kiveton Pit Top today were: 9 Moorhen, 4 Coot,
1 Cormorant, c25 Fieldfare & 1 Stonechat.
At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were 2 m & 1 f Wigeon, 2
Mute Swan, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Snipe,
c150 Starling feeding, 14 Moorhen &
25 Canada Geese feeding. 15th November At Dinnington Marsh today were 11 Bullfinch, 1 Willow Tit, 8 Long-tailed Tit, 8 Blue Tit, 3 Great Tit & c20 Blackbird. 13th November At Langold Lake today: 53 Mallard, 79 Coot, 33 Tufted Duck, 5 Teal, 11 Gadwall, 6 Wigeon, 1 m Pochard, 21 Moorhen, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Siskin, 1 m Great Spotted Woodpecker, & 82 Black-headed Gull. At Hodsock were c30 Meadow Pipit, c60 Starling & c50 Black-headed Gull. At Carlton Lake were 2 Heron & 2 f Goosander. On Hewett Arms Pond today: 27 Mallard, 10 Coot, 1 Tufted Duck, 5 Moorhen, 3 Heron & 1 Greylag Goose. 11th November Another stroll around Langold Lake-highlights included 18 pairs of Mallard, 50 Coot, 4 Great Crested Grebe, 10 pairs of Tufted Duck, 6 Gadwall, a pair of Shoveler and a Cormorant. Passerines included a good sized tit flock, Nuthatch & Treecreeper. Plus 3 Wigeon, 2 Pochard, 1 Teal and a Common Buzzard overhead. At Axle Lane were 2000 Golden Plover. 10th November At Langold Lake today were 26 Tufted Ducks, 8 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 2 Pochard, pair of Shoveler, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, 2 Siskin and Cormorant. 4th November At Langold Lake were 150 Black-headed Gulls, a pair of Shoveler, 3 Wigeon, Teal, 7 Gadwall, 10 Tufted Duck, 6 Great Crested Grebes, Cormorant, 93 Coot, 22 Moorhen and Water Rail showing well at the W end of lake. 3rd November A Grey Wagtail in a Throapham garden, the observers first in 10 years. At NAPT a pair of Kestrel noisily hunting the side of the plateau. 2nd November At Axle Lane today were 300Golden Plover,35 Grey Partridge,single Corn Bunting and 2 Whooper Swans >E. 31st October At Langold Lake were 7 Great Crested Grebes, a pair of Wigeon, 1f Shoveler, 2 Common Gulls and small parties of Redwings and Siskins. At Letwell were 45 Fieldfare. We have discovered that the farmer at South Farm, Letwell has taken out 3 hedgerows to the south of the farm. It seems that he has done it legitimately as there were planning notices posted in the village dated 31st August-there's one we missed! 30th October 30+ Fieldfare over Crow Wood, Langold Lake. 29th October c100 Pink-footed Geese >E over South Anston at 09:10. 25th October At NAPT today-Kingfisher (again) on bulrushes at Cramfit Pond. When disturbed it flew across new road and followed main brook NE, 8 Pheasant, including 4 imm, on fringes of field SW behind Greenlands Park, Kestrel on street lamp near Hospice, single Reed Bunting on Sedge near overflow. 23rd October Jack Snipe & Green Sandpiper at NAPT. 21st October At NAPT were Green Sandpiper, plus m&f Stonechat near the bird hide. 20th October Again at Langold Lake today included 2 Wigeon, Cormorant still, and 6 Great Crested Grebe (2ad 4 imm). On First Lane, South Anston were 182 Fieldfare and 16 Redwing >S and Green Sandpiper >N, 2 Grey Wagtail and Little Owl. Along the Chesterfield Canal were 7 Goldcrest, 3 Marsh Tit, Willow Tit, 30 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Green Woodpecker, 2 Little Grebe and 2 Grey Wagtail. At Anston Grange Farm were 23 Yellowhammer, 12 Tree Sparrow, Brambling, 100 Skylark, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. At NAPT were Common Snipe and Green Sandpiper. 19th October Probable m Mandarin today at Woodhouse Inn on the Chesterfield Canal about 50yds to the Worksop side of the Canal bridge. Has been missing since the late summer. A walk around Langold Lake produced the following highlights; 2 Nuthatch, Willow Tit, 30 Coot, 30 Mallard, a pair of Wigeon, Cormorant, 6 Great Crested Grebe & 12 Tufted Duck. At Rackford Lane, circa 80 Fieldfare and at Woodsetts/ Lindrick Common, 5 Redwing. At Kiveton Pit Top were 1 juv. Stonechat on fence forming the southern boundary, 1 Green Sandpiper flushed from near the Broadbridge Dyke Cuckoo Path bridge, 2 Jay, 2 Yellowhammer, c450 Canada Geese flying towards RVCP, c50 Fieldfare, 8 Reed Bunting, 2 Willow Tit, 12 Long-tailed Tit and 3 Teal overhead. Along the Chesterfield Canal between Kiveton and Top Locks were 28 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 1 Nuthatch, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Little Grebe. 12th October First reports of Siskin on bird feeders today-winter is almost here! 16th October Mid afternoon stroll round whole site produced 33 different species. Highlights included 5 Snipe and pair of Mallard in overflow. Cramfit Copse held 2 Bullfinch, pair of Stonechat, single Reed Bunting and a flock of 12 Long-tailed Tit. Around the new Bluebell Hospice, the grounds held 2 Pied Wagtail & covey of 8 Grey Partridge. The Stables Field held 4 Pheasant ( 2m 1f 1imm), with 4 Canada Geese >W. The Wader Scrape held large a flock of Corvids and Woodpigeon. 10th October
At Axle Lane today were 1200 Golden Plover late evening,
with 16 Redwing >S and single Wheatear. At NAPT; 2
Willow Tit, Chiffchaff, Grey Wagtail
and 4 Stonechat (3m and 1f) by the overflow. 9th October At NAPT a late afternoon stroll produced a Kingfisher at Cramfit Pond with 3 Moorhen and 2 Grey Wagtail. 2 Kestrel over plateau & scrape mobbed by Corvids. 3 Stonechat (2m 1f) with single Green Woodpecker. 8 Black-headed Gulls & 13 Lesser Black-backed Gulls >E. Sparrowhawk & Mistle Thrush in Alcove Plantation. 8th October At Axle Lane, late evening, Hobby chasing 4 bats over ponds, then went to roost in trees by pond. 7th October At Axle Lane today were 600 Golden Plover, 89 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 60 Black-headed Gulls, 60 Linnet, 250 Skylark, 2 Siskin and 6 Redwing >S. Along First Lane South Anston were 2 Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 20 Yellowhammer, 20 Chaffinch and Brambling, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker & 7 Lesser Redpoll, 35 Fieldfare, 30 Meadow Pipit and 116 Skylark >S. Plus 65 Pink-footed Geese >E. On the small pond were 15 Teal, Green Sandpiper and Coot with a small juv. At Langold Lake were 2 Common Buzzard, Shoveler, 2 Wigeon, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 20 Tufted Duck, 80 Coot, 11 Moorhen, Siskin, Chiffchaff and Grey Wagtail. 2nd October At Langold Lake today were a pair of Pochard, 8 Great Crested Grebe, (4 ad. + 4 large striped young). At Roche Abbey were 18 Teal, 11 Moorhen, 2 Marsh Tit & 1 Chiffchaff. Firbeck held 86 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag Goose & 8 Mistle Thrush in a flock. 1st October At Kiveton Pit Top today were 138 Canada Geese >W, 18 Moorhen, 11 Coot, 25 Mallard >S, 17 Long-tailed Tit in a flock, 2 Grey Wagtail, plus a report from reliable sources there were 19 Heron around the fishing ponds early morning a few weeks ago, and another observer had seen 29 one morning. At NAPT, a good 3 hour walk produced 52 species, a steady passage of Swallow & Redwing, with a late Sand Martin >S. Several Grey Wagtails, 6 Siskin & Redpoll >S plus 22 Robin, 3 Chiffchaff, 32 Meadow Pipit, 18 Skylark, 50 Lapwing, 8 Snipe, 2 Bullfinch & Jay. 30th September

were 2 Common Buzzard, 32 Red-legged Partridge,
c150 Black-headed Gull, 15 Lesser Black-backed Gull,
c75 Rook & 1 Sparrowhawk with single
Buzzard over Carlton Lake. At NAPT were 12 Magpie,
5 Mallard, 4 Snipe, c24 Goldfinch,
2 Bullfinch & 4 Redwing. 29th September At Kiveton Pit Top a single Dunlin flew from the main fishing pond, 1 Cormorant, scared away by the Warden. 2 Bullfinch, 1 Snipe, 33 Lapwing >W. At Tommy Flockton's Marsh 1 Green Sandpiper feeding at the edge of the main water area, 11 Mistle Thrush, 30 Greenfinch, 1 Snipe, 25 Canada Geese with 1 Greylag Goose >W. 28th September At NAPT a juv Gannet flew over the Hospice @ 08:10. First seen at about 100 meters distance, flying over the Hospice, in from the E then disappearing NW. A new species for SK58! 27th September At Dinnington Marsh today were c25 Redwing, 41 Mallard overhead, 15 Long-tailed Tit, 17 Blue Tit, 4 Willow Tit, 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Bullfinch, 2 Jay, 3 Heron & 11 Pheasant. 26th September 4 Siskin >S over Axle Lane. 23rd September Early morning at Axle Lane revealed 25 Meadow Pipit,192 Swallow,78 Skylark and 140 Lesser Black-backed Gulls all >S,600 Golden Plover, 100 Linnet, 76 Mallard >W and m Peregrine hunting before heading W. Over Brampton Common single Common Buzzard and 2 Common Buzzard over Loscar. 22nd September Early morning on Axle Lane produced 150 Meadow Pipit, 89 Swallow, 5 Lesser Redpoll , 34 Skylark and 200 Lesser Black-backed Gulls >S, 156 Canada Geese >W, 600 Golden Plover, Green Woodpecker and Willow Tit. 21st September At NAPT today-a family group of 4 Kestrel on SE slopes of plateau, mobbed by Jackdaws & Magpies. Cramfit Copse held 3 Bullfinch, 13 Long-tailed Tit plus 2 Willow Tit with a pair of Chiffchaff amongst tit flock. M Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming and peeling bark in very mature Hawthorne near Cramfit bridge, alongside the railway. A pair of Pheasant also there. A pair of Goldcrest in Elderberry on boundary of sewage works, with 3 Pied Wagtail on equipment inside the site. Pair of Snipe disturbed on the Overflow, NE corner with single Jack Snipe, in very small pond next to footpath, S on plateau. Cramfit Brook held 1 Grey Wagtail, 7 Moorhen (3 imm) and 4 Mallard (3 imm). 15th September At Axle Lane today were 2 Chiffchaff, 200 Golden Plover, 30 House Martin, 44 Meadow Pipit, 3 Sand Martin, Tree Pipit and Greenshank all >S early morning. Honey Buzzard reported >S over Sandbeck at 11:25 (per BirdGuides). 14th September
At NAPT were 2 Heron on the scrape and c20 Snipe
were at the water treatment balancing pond. A steady stream
of Lesser Black-backed Gulls >SE. At Axle Lane were 400 Golden
Plover, Yellow Wagtail >S and Wheatear
late afternoon. 9th September
At Axle Lane today were 450 Golden Plover. At Loscar:
2 Common Buzzard and 200 Linnet. At Grange
Farm, Loscar, Common Buzzard , Yellow Wagtail and
Tree Pipit >S. At Turnerwood were 2 Common Buzzard
and Cormorant. At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were
-3 Snipe 1 juv. Green Woodpecker calling
& feeding on the ground, 3 Mallard plus one dead
bird floating in the water, presumed shot !! 4 Heron,
13 Collared Dove, 11 Moorhen & 6 Song
Thrush. 8th September Female Wheatear at Wallingwells today. At Kiveton Pit Top today: Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers,10 Chiffchaff, Blackcap,Willow Tit, 2 Lesser Redpoll >S, 5 Bullfinch, 22 Canada Geese >W , 21 Greylag Geese >E and 51 >W, including a single White-fronted Goose.(undoubtedly feral). 7th September At Axle Lane today were 400 Golden Plover, Dunlin over calling, Yellow Wagtail and Common Buzzard late afternoon. 5th September At NAPT 3 Snipe on balancing pond, plus Reed Warbler, c40 Goldfinch. Mixed flock feeding on water treatment perimeter include several Chiffchaffs and Long-tailed Tits. 3rd September At Axle Lane early morning Yellow Wagtail >S, 200 Golden Plover and Curlew still present in stubble field by ponds until late evening. 2nd September Early morning on Axle Lane ad. and 2 juv. Hobbies, juv. Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 216 Golden Plover, 11 Snipe feeding in flooded field, 27 Grey Partridge,10 Carrion Crow,100 Linnet,80 Greenfinch and Yellow Wagtail. Also Common Buzzard over Dinnington Marsh. 1st September At Dinnington Marsh were 10 Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroat, 3 Blackcap, 7 Willow Tit, 2 juv. Sparrowhawks and Siskin. At NAPT were 4 Chiffchaff , 2 Blackcap, 2 Willow Tit and 80 Goldfinch. At Axle Lane single imm. Wheatear. 30th August At Axle Lane today were 134 Golden Plover, 17 Grey Partridge and Wheatear. Over Loscar were 2 Common Buzzard. 25th August Early morning at Dinnington Marsh were Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, juv Little Owl, 9 Bullfinch (mostly juvs), Blackcap, 7 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Tit, 7 Tree Sparrow, Kingfisher and 2 Grey Wagtails >S. At nearby Brampton Common 76 Lapwing. Mid-afternoon >W over Axle Lane was a Peregrine. 24th August E> Over South Anston early morning circa 25 Dunlin. 22nd August At Axle Lane, Curlew feeding in field near to main path, plus Common Buzzard sat in field and Wheatear. 21st August Single Hobby over Brown Baileys at 16.50 this afternoon. Single Wheatear at Axle Lane. 20th August Single Wheatear at Axle Lane. 18th August At Dinnington Marsh 2 Curlew feeding in grass field, Snipe, Garden Warbler,5 Chiffchaff, 8 Bullfinch and 5 Willow Tit. At Hodsock were 500 Swallows, 300 Starling, 40 Tree Sparrow, Green Woodpecker, Willow Warbler, Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard. At Brampton Common were 100 Swallows, Tree Sparrow, 4 Spotted Flycatchers, 10 Willow Warbler, 5 Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Kestrel and Common Buzzard. At at a site, an adult and 3 juv. Hobby and Common Buzzard. 17th August 15:00-16:30 Training session at NAPT for imm. Kestrels. Two family groups over Plateau & E of scrape, going through routines of hover, swoop, land & catch prey. 2 adults & 4 juveniles, 6 in total, all in flight at same time. At Axle Lane today were 52 Golden Plover, 8 Lapwing, 18 Grey Partridge,7 Heron, 200 Rook, 4 Reed Bunting, 6 Corn Bunting and Roe Deer. 15th August A Raven flying low, west over farmland @ SK 58 83 (south of Carlton-in-Lindrick), mobbed by 3 Carrion Crows at c. 18:00. At the top-end of SK58, a Hobby hunting Swallows over Carr village. 13th August At Axle Lane today were Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 246 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 400 Black-headed Gulls and a Golden Plover. 11th August At Axle Lane today were 3 Reed Bunting, 3 Corn Bunting (1 feeding young), 9 Skylark & 1 Lesser Whitethroat (still present on 12th), 7 Common Whitethroat, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 104 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 50 Black-headed Gulls. At Dinnington Marsh were 3 Kestrel, 2 Common Buzzard and report of 2 Curlew on the 10th and 11th. 9th August At Axle Lane a single Golden Plover. We can confirm a third pair of Barn Owls in the square-again successful. 8th August Over Axle Lane, 250 Lesser Black-backed Gulls >NE, 7 Heron, Common Whitethroat and juv. Whinchat. 7th August From Langold Lake today were 26 Canada Goose, 34 Coot, 14 Moorhen, 7 Tufted Duck, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Swift, 12 Swallow, 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff & 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. At Roche Abbey were c150 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (a continuous passage between 09.30 and 10.00 am), 9 Mallard, 2 Moorhen, c25 Greenfinch, 2 Kestrel & 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. At Axle Lane this evening were a juv. Whinchat and a Reed Warbler 6th August At
Axle Lane were 139 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 10 Heron,
single Corn Bunting, Yellow Wagtail and
late evening, a Long-eared Owl plus the first returning
Golden Plover. Over Loscar 2 Common Buzzard. 5th August A good bash around the square produced: At Axle Lane 2 Corn Bunting, 3 Reed Bunting, 8 Yellow Wagtails, 11 Heron and single Common Tern. At East Field Lane 2 Yellow Wagtails. At Lingodell 144 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag Geese and Kingfisher. From Kingswood Corner were 5 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Barn Owls watched this evening at one of 2 sites locally. 10th July A pair of Barn Owl hunting, and observed carrying prey to a disused building in the square-clearly some breeding success. Owl site within the square: 21.45 Barn Owl flew
into the nest box & left about 15 minutes later. A young Barn
Owl flew in from the SE towards the box, circled then flew N,
it returned about 10 minutes later and headed off back SE, the bird
was calling all the time. 21st May At NAPT were 3 Greylag Geese over, 2 Turtle Doves, one at Cramfit entrance and one at Church Lane entrance. At Slade Hills was single Lesser Whitethroat. Today a youth was caught shooting a Canada Goose gosling,
whilst holding it!!!, he was confronted, and fled, his pistol was taken

A pair of Hobby perched in the usual tree at the site in the E of SK58. NAPT was cold and grey, but did produce x2 Green Woodpecker, and 6 Lapwing on the wader scrape. Highlight of the day was a flock of 63 noisy, low flying Whooper Swan, >NNW over Hodsock. Also here were lots of Lapwing and 5 Buzzard. Nearby Langold Lake produced 8 pairs of Great Crested Grebe (inc. x3 nests), 25 Coot, 29 Mallard, 12 Tufted Duck and 3 Greylag Geese. Firbeck was quiet with just 2 Buzzard for our trouble. However Kings Wood corner produced 3 Hawfinch and 8 Buzzard, as well as Great Spotted Woodpecker, lots of Nuthatch, and a calling Tawny Owl. At 11:00 38 Whooper Swans low >N over Langold village. 24th March From Kings Wood corner today were 7 Buzzard, single Sparrowhawk, 2 Nuthatch, Marsh Tit, Green Woodpecker, and Tawny Owl. However the highlight was Raven >NW. 23rd March Male Mandarin still on Chesterfield Canal, by Dormer Tools, off the A57. 19th March At Brown Bailey's today were 2 Mute Swan, 6 Canada Geese,18 Tufted Duck (12m 6f), 2 Great Crested Grebe and single Little Grebe. 18th March Ringed Plover from the hide at NAPT this afternoon, plus Little Grebe again. 17th March At NAPT was a good movement of Golden Plover, with c2000 >S. Other notables included 18 Wren, 7 Skylark on the top plateau, along with Redshank >N, and 2 m Wheatear. Lower down the wader scrape held 2 pairs of Lapwing, with 8 Chiffchaff on site, most around Cramfit Pond. Little Grebe have also returned, and were 'whinneying' Highlights from a brief visit to Kings Wood corner produced single Hawfinch feeding, several Buzzard & Marsh Tit. Ringed Plover arrived this afternoon at NAPT (viewed from wader scrape). Along the Chesterfield Canal the m Mandarin still near Dormer Tools & Lock-keeper pub. In the same area, an interesting record of a pair of displaying Raven over Lindrick Golf Course at c11.00am. Plus single Woodcock across the A57 near Lindrick Dale and landed at the side of the road & survived, 2 Chiffchaff & Green Woodpecker calling on the Golf Course. 15th March Just in the square, at Rhodesia, by the Lock Keeper Pub, along the Chesterfield Canal was a m Mandarin Duck, this species slowly establishing itself as a feral breeder. 14th March Spring is here! Along the Chesterfield Canal, on the stretch between the S Anston path and Top Locks were 5 singing Chiffchaff & a pair of Kestrel displaying. Heron perched in trees by Stiff's, single Nuthatch calling at Top Locks & 1 Grey Wagtail feeding. Single Cormorant > SW over Top Locks. A visit to Grange Farm, Loscar produced 30+ Yellowhammer,
8+ Corn Bunting (singing), plenty of Tree Sparrow,
Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, 200 Fieldfare,
Little Owl and 2 Grey Partridge. An evening
looking for owls produced 4 species including a calling/ flying Barn
Owl at the same successful breeding site as last year. Little
Owls & Tawny Owls seemed to be everywhere we
stopped, with a pair of Long-eared Owls at a traditional
site, away from the usual winter roosts. 11th March A pair of Oystercatchers at Hodsock. By Hungerhill Plantation today were m & f Stonechat (good numbers around this year). 10th March At Axle Lane today were 3000 Golden Plover, at Hodsock were 25 Lapwing and 5 Buzzard. From Kings Wood corner were 10 Buzzard, single Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Loscar Common produced Corn Bunting, 3 Buzzard and a Raven >SW, this a different bird from the one seen in the northern half of SK58.. 9th March Green Woodpeckers were very vocal today, single in Anston Stones Wood, a second at Woodsetts, a third in Hawks Wood and a fourth at Harry Crofts. A Little Owl again in a nest box at Rackford Farm and at Lindrick Golf Course (north of A57) were 2 Chiffchaff and 4 Jays. 8th March Pair of displaying Kestrel N over hospice/ railway line. Overflow held 12 Mallard, 2 Lapwing and pair of Grey Partridge flushed from banks > into willow scrub. Cramfit held feeding Green Woodpecker and pair of Siskin. Wader scrape was fairly quiet with 75+ mixed Corvids, 8 Mallard and 4 displaying Lapwing. In Hawthorn next to Culvert on "new access road" was a pair of Willow Tit, one of which was ringed. Plateau held good yield of 12 Skylark with Kestrel hovering over banks of small pond in SE corner. 7th March Corn Bunting at Axle Lane today. 6th March At Brown Bailey's today were single Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe (1 sitting on nest). At Shireoaks Marina were single Grey Wagtail & Green Woodpecker. Hewett Arms Pond produced single Mute Swan, 6 Greylag Geese, 38 Canada Geese, 15 Jackdaw & 1 Green Woodpecker. By Grange Farm were 9 Yellowhammer, 350 Fieldfare (feeding on winter feed crop ) & 400 Starling. An amazing record at Kiveton Pit Top today, a single Little Ringed Plover flying around the arena area at the pit site at 09:00, this the groups earliest record by nearly 3 weeks, with 9 Lapwing displaying over nearby ploughed field. At nearby Tommy Flockton's Marsh were 10 Teal, 6 Coot, 8 Mallard & 2 Gadwall. Anston this afternoon. 26th February At Langold Lake today, single Greylag Goose, 3 Great Crested Grebe & 2 Pochard. 25th February c11:30 On footpath between Rackford Road and Dewidales Wood, a pair of Little Owl and 20+ Skylark. 11 Buzzard from Kings Wood today, with 3 active Nuthatch, plus Great Spotted Woodpecker. Highlight was a female Merlin >E. Woodlark have returned to the square, with 2 birds at favoured location, although a site 200m from this site held 2 more, or the same 2?? Carlton Lake produced 6 Ruddy Duck (3m 2f), 16 Moorhen and single f Wigeon. Highlights from Langold Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Heron, a pair of Gadwall, and 3 Pochard (2m 1f). At 15:30 c350 Pink-footed Geese >WNW over N. Anston. 24th February At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were m& f Shoveler, 15 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 14 Teal, Grey Wagtail and 15 Redwing. At Brampton Common were 5 Snipe, 1 Jack Snipe & 6 Lapwing. At NAPT 2 calling Water Rail. 21st February Single Jack Snipe at Wallingwells today. At Axle Lane today were 12 Cormorant on the ponds. The fields held 1000 Golden Plover, with 3 Corn Bunting. Dinnington Marsh held 2 Little Owl, 2 Tawny Owl and single Woodcock. 20th February At 05:25 a Barn Owl flew across Hundred Acre Lane (N of Worksop). 6 Cormorant on Axle Lane ponds. 19th February
A brisk walk around NAPT produced 31 different species. The wader
scrape held 8 Black-headed Gull with 15 Lesser Black-backed
Gull >W, 15 Mallard & 8 Lapwing.
A pair of Fieldfare on fresh soil bund adjacent to Hospice,
single Snipe in flooded Overflow Meadow with m Pheasant
.Area between scrape & overflow held 6 Mallard,
4 Moorhen and f Sparrowhawk attempting
to catch Reed Buntings before moving off E. Large flock
of mixed Corvids (circa 250) on E fringes of scrape. College
Fields & treeline held 30+ Woodpigeon, 2 Song
Thrush, 40+ Starlings with single Green
Woodpecker and Mistle Thrush >S towards Alcove
Plantation. Top plateau held 5 Skylark, very vocal and
active. 18th February
A 3 hour stint at Kings Wood Corner produced a staggering 21 Buzzard
in the a 17th February A walk around Langold Pit Top and Langold Lake produced the following: 12 Skylark, most singing, 13 Magpie, 12 Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting, 7 Chaffinch, 4 Blackbird, 5 Song Thrush, 7 Wren & Robin, 67 Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, 7 Bullfinch, 500+ Woodpigeon, Green Woodpecker, 31 Mallard, 35 Coot, 11 Tufted Duck, 4 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Mistle Thrush, 14 Moorhen, single m Pochard and Ruddy Duck , 2m Gadwall, 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Teal, 50+ Fieldfare and 30+ Siskin. 15th February On Tommy Flockton's Marsh today were 4 Wigeon, 15 Mallard, 7 Teal & 1 Gadwall. Next door at Kiveton Pit Top were single Stonechat, c1000 Golden Plover in field across towards Woodall, 2 Mute Swan on fishponds, c65 Black-headed Gull & 2 Grey Partridge. At Axle Lane today were 4000 Golden Plover. 14th February
A half hour stroll around Carlton Lake produced 4 Ruddy Duck (3m
1f), single Wigeon, 3 Grey Heron, 61 Canada
Geese and single Greylag Goose. 13th February
At NAPT today were single Willow Tit, 4 Bullfinch
& 21 Mallard on wader scrape. At Hodsock were
3 Buzzard, 1 Shelduck flying around the
site, 7 Red-legged Partridge, c50 Meadow Pipit,
c30 Pied Wagtail and c25 Skylark. At nearby
Langold Lake were 33 Mallard, 39 Coot, 16
Tufted Duck, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 97
Canada Geese, 13 Moorhen, 1 Pochard,
8 Gadwall, 55 Black-headed Gull, 4 Nuthatch
calling, 3 Bullfinch and single Jay.
Down the road at Carlton Lake were 2m Ruddy Duck, the
first of the year.. 12th February
At NAPT in scrub at Cramfit were single Woodcock flushed
during futile search for Water Rail, plus 2 Bullfinch
& 6 Lapwing on wader scrape. 11th February A good 3 hours around NAPT today produced a steady passage of Herring Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls, 8 Dunnock, 5 Mistle Thrush, 6 Skylark. Kestrel appear to be nesting along the railway. Highlight of the morning were Woodcock and Water Rail accidentally flushed within 3 feet of each other. Plenty of water in the flood defence-just single Snipe here though. Stonechat-m near Long-thwaite Wood, at junction of Lamb Lane and Leys Lane. Kings Wood corner produced 3 Nuthatch, 100's of Woodpigeon, 2 Tawny Owl calling, 7 Buzzard and a pair of Kestrel. Langold Lake produced 51 Coot, 13 Tufted Duck, 4 Great Crested Grebe, 18 Mallard, 6 Moorhen, 3 Pochard (1m, 2f), 6 Gadwall and single Buzzard over. Nearby Hodsock held 20 Linnet, 3 Buzzard and 33 Lapwing. Single Wigeon on Carlton Lake, with 15 Moorhen, including the leucistic bird still. 10th February Good numbers of winter thrushes at Brampton Common, with 500 Fieldfare & 150+ Redwing. Also 2 Sparrowhawk, 5 Teal, 6 Snipe, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls >S, Buzzard, 30 Linnet and Willow Tit. At Dinnington Marsh were Sparrowhawk, 50 Fieldfare & Redwing, 2 Bullfinch, single Snipe, Mute Swan and Cormorant. Roche Abbey produced 5 Buzzard, c20 Teal, 10+ Mallard, Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. 7th February

and Green Woodpecker. Green Sandpiper briefly
at the pond and a Tawny Owl called from Kings wood in
daylight hours. c34 Fieldfare at Lingodell. A very cold
walk round Langold Pit Top and Langold Lake produced: 8 Robin,
2 Yellowhammer & Green Woodpecker, single
Snipe, 10 Blackbird, 38 Black-headed
Gull, 10 Bullfinch, 22 Mallard,
80 Canada Geese, 42 Coot, 4 Great
Crested Grebe, 8 Moorhen and 5 Gadwall,
single Pochard, 26 Tufted Duck, single Buzzard,
2 Goosander and 8 Tree Sparrow. 4th February
Wildfowl at Carlton Lake included 24 Canada Geese and
16 Goosander (5m + 11f). At nearby Langold Lake were 5
Great Crested Grebe, 118 Canada Geese,
1f Wigeon, 6 Gadwall, 6 Pochard,
54 Tufted Duck, 360 Black-headed Gull and
3 Common Gull. At Axle Lane were 2000 Golden Plover.
At Brampton Common were Little Owl, 7 Snipe
and single Jack Snipe, 6 Lapwing, 3 Stonechat
(2m &1f), 31 Meadow Pipit and Willow Tit. 3rd February A pair of Stonechat at Brampton Common plus a flock of 300 Pink-footed Geese and single Jack Snipe. Along the Chesterfield Canal between South Anston and Turnerwood were 400 Pink-footed Geese >W, 500 Woodpigeon, Tawny Owl calling, Sparrowhawk, 2 Common Buzzard, Kestrel, 2 Marsh Tit, 2 Willow Tit, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Nuthatch, 10 Bullfinch, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 25 Chaffinch, 4 Tree Sparrow, 90 Fieldfare, 39 Redwing, 4 Song Thrush, 6 Goldcrest, 22 Moorhen, Little Grebe, 6 Teal and 3 Water Vole. Near Dinnington a single Long-eared Owl over a main road at dusk. 2nd February

Complaints to the editor!!!. 30th January Between 15,000-20,000 Pink-footed Geese >W over the square in 3 hours this morning, massive movement in the fine, high pressure weather system. 27th January A bit of movement of winter thrushes, with circa 30-50 Fieldfare >S over Throapham. 26th January
A cruise
around the areas waters produced: Langold Lake 42 Mallard,
45 Tufted Duck, 57 Coot, 10 Pochard,
4 Great Crested Grebe, 14 Moorhen, 6 Gadwall,
3 m Goosander over the lake, 75 Black-headed Gull,
2 Nuthatch, 65 Canada Geese, 6 Siskin,
15 Goldfinch, 1 Green Woodpecker. At Nearby
Hodsock were 15 Pied Wagtail feeding on ploughed field
together with about 45 Meadow Pipit c 150 Lapwing
in adjacent field with c150 Starling. Carlton Lake
held 20 Goosander (8 m & 12 f), 3 Heron
and 6 Coot. The tour ended at Brown Bailey's with 2 Great
Crested Grebe, 29 Coot, 10 Tufted Duck,
2 Mallard and 6 Canada Geese. 24th January
A small race type Canada Goose, at Firbeck
Hall today, access from footpath N of hall. SK57890. Amongst c262+
Canada Geese. The finder thinks it's of the minima
race, being very small and dark, although this interior race
is unlikely to make it access the Atlantic, and so no doubt a feral
bird. Firbeck also held single Green Woodpecker and Greylag
Goose as well as 22nd January At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were 1 Grey Heron, 2 pairs of Wigeon, 2 pairs of Mallard, 1 m Sparrowhawk, 1 Grey Wagtail, at least 14 Pied Wagtails and 2 Meadow Pipits. Fieldfare was heard and Redwings were numerous to Kiveton Park Station along the canal. Further along the canal a Kingfisher was close to the canal feeder at Kiveton Park and c30 Siskin in Alders close to Thorpe Bridge. 18th January Barn Owl again, this time over the A634 at Firbeck at 06:15. 16th January Barn Owl seen regularly at 04:00, perched on main road just W of Stone, by turning to Kings Wood. 14th January Again at Axle Lane were 2000 Golden Plover. Over Kingswood Corner were 500 Pink-footed Geese>W (in 5 skeins), 1000 Woodpigeon, 1000 Rooks, 12 Common Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk, single Kestrel, 2 Marsh Tit, & 2 Nuthatch. Roche Abbey produced 5 Bullfinch. On Brampton Common were m & f Stonechat. At Dinnington Marsh Snipe were accidentally flushed by the central disused railway track. Also at an undisclosed site today a Long-eared Owl was accidentally flushed-in the vicinity of a traditional site. 13th January At Kiveton Pit Top today were 11 Meadow Pipit, 55 Black-headed Gull flying through & on the fishing ponds, 35 Lesser Black-backed Gull flying through, about 125 Fieldfare, c50 Redwing & 5 Goldfinch. At Tommy Flockton's Marsh were 3 Heron in an adjacent Wheat field, 8 Mallard, 4 m & 2 f Wigeon and a pair of Gadwall. At Axle Lane 100 Pink-footed Geese >NE. 12th January
At Roche Abbey were 3 Marsh Tits, 35 Mallard,
17 Teal, 1 Heron feeding on the pond, 1
Common Gull over, 3 Bullfinch, 2 Nuthatch
calling and 22 Redwing. At nearby Kingswood Corner were
a further 2 Nuthatch, 2 Coal Tit, 4 Long-tailed
Tit, 1 Buzzard flying nearby. Thwaite House Farm
produced 3 Tree Sparrow and a further Buzzard
flying over. At NAPT on the scrape were 2 Black-headed Gull
single Common Gull . At Carr Hill were m & f Stonechat. 9th January
NAPT -A quick stroll through produced Greenfinch, Goldfinch
& Chaffinch. 4 types of Tit (Blue, Coal,
Great & Long -tailed) all in good
numbers. Also present were m Sparrowhawk harassing/ hunting
Collared Doves, of which there were many! Others included
5 Magpie, several Robins, single Wren,
6 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush and a large flock
of 50+ Starlings. 8th January Raven over Roche Abbey today. At Brampton Fisheries -5 Cormorant flying around the ponds. At Langold Lake were 4 male Goosander, 14 Pochard, 15 Gadwall, 1 Common Gull, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 116 Canada Geese & 52 Tufted Duck, 54 Mallard, 9 Moorhen, 72 Coot, 150 Black-headed Gull, 2 Common Gull, 50 Siskin & 4 Bullfinch. 7th January Over Axle Lane were 75 Pink-footed Geese >W & 1000 Golden Plover. 6th January At Brampton Common today were 200 Fieldfare, 200 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, plus a pair of Stonechat, 100 Starling, 50 Yellowhammer, 15 Linnet, 10 Chaffinch, 2 Tree Sparrow, Buzzard & 127 Pink-footed Geese >N. At a site in the square was single Long-eared Owl. 5th January At Langold Lake today were 3 Nuthatch, 15 Blue Tit, 6 Great Tit, 25 Siskin, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 20 Chaffinch, 14 Goldfinch. 12 Greenfinch, 5 Yellowhammer, 65 Black-headed Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 104 Canada Geese, single Greylag Goose, 49 Mallard, 11 Moorhen, 78 Coot, 42 Tufted Duck, 15 Pochard, 14 Gadwall & 5 Great Crested Grebe. At Hodsock were single Buzzard, 50 Meadow Pipit, 60 Pied Wagtail, 200+ Fieldfare, 25 Linnet, 3 Tree Sparrow, 80 Lapwing >E & 2 Reed Bunting. At Brampton Common were single Lapwing, Willow Tit & Grey Wagtail. In Anston Stones Wood were single Common Buzzard, 2 Coal Tit, 25 Chaffinch, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper & 2 Marsh Tit. Brown Bailey's held: 22 Coot, 11 Tufted Duck, 2 Mallard, 1 Moorhen & 2 Great Crested Grebe. Meanwhile Axle Lane held 2000 Golden Plover with Herring Gull >N. Over Carlton Lake was single Cormorant >SE, single Heron, 12 Moorhen & 2 Coot. 1st

lights in Firbeck, probably a result of the mild weather. 30th December At Langold Lake were 3 Great Crested Grebe, 10 Gadwall, 12 Pochard & 38 Tufted Duck. With a male Goosander later. 28th December The SK58 Christmas walk produced some good birds including 50 Greenfinch at Slade Hills, and a modest number of Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting & Linnet at Slade Hills, with Merlin through. 8 Teal at Roche Abbey & 40 Mallard. Over Kings Wood corner were an impressive pair of Raven, gronking away as they went >SW. Along Kings Wood were many Marsh Tit, with Buzzard on East Field Lane. Returning to Laughton for a welcome pint & meal at the St Ledger. 27th December 3000 Golden Plover at Axle Lane today. 26th December On Brown Bailey's today were single Great Crested Grebe,1 Little Grebe,14 Tufted Duck, 7 Mallard,17 Black-headed Gull and 11 Great Black-backed Gulls >SW. At Axle Lane were 2000 Golden Plover, 82 Herring Gulls >S, 12 Great Black-backed Gull >S, 12 Lesser Black-backed Gull & 2 Sparrowhawk. 25th December At Axle Lane today were 2000 Golden Plover. 24th December At Axle Lane were 2000 Golden Plover & unusually 2 Tree Sparrow. At Langold Lake were 14 Gadwall, 3 Pochard, Grey Wagtail, 28 Tufted Duck, 56 Mallard, 72 Coot, 15 Moorhen, 10 Common Gull, 271 Black-headed Gull and 5 Great Crested Grebe. 21st December A skein of 60 Pink-footed Geese over Throapham this afternoon. |
