SK58 Year List Competition

2010 Year list Competition-It was a really close run thing this year, so close for the first time we had a tie, with joint winners Mick Clay & Andy Hirst with 129 spp. John Gallagher came in a close second at his first attempt with 127 spp. Here's to what 2011 will bring.

31st December Langold Lake remains mostly frozen, despite this; 2m & 1f Pochard, 1m Shoveler & 1 pair of Gadwall present. Also Tawny Owl calling from western end. At Firbeck were 230 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag Goose & 1 Green Woodpecker (Geoff & Lyn Facer). Further counts at Langold Lake produced 60 Mallard, 85 Coot, 11 Moorhen, m Shoveler 2 m& 1 f Pochard, 2 Mute Swan, 3 Nuthatch, 3 Siskin. Plus lots of Rook, Crow & Jackdaw, c 400 in total. 30th December 260 Pink-footed Geese W> over Dinnington at 15:00 (John Gallagher), with a further 150 >NW over South Anston at 16:15 (Mick Clay).

Wigeon John Gallagher28th December 2 & 9 Waxwings briefly at Throapham this morning, singles heard later in fog, plus Brambling over (Andy Hirst).

27th December Langold Lake produced 100 Greenfinch, 6 Brambling, 2 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Coal Tit, 7 Nuthatch, 5 Treecreeper, 7 Goldcrest, Jay, 3 Green Woodpecker, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Buzzard. At Thwaite House Farm Pond were 5 Snipe & 9 Red-legged Partridge (John Gallagher).

24th December In Lindrick Dale were 18 Tufted Duck, 16 Mallard, 3 Little Grebe, 4 Gadwall, 10 Moorhen and 9 Coot. On the Chesterfield Canal at Turnerwood were 2 Jay, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker plus Cormorant, Snipe & Wigeon (John Gallagher).

22nd December Again at Langold Lake were 60 Siskin's in Alders, 80 Greenfinch 200 Rooks and Jackdaws, plus Woodcock in the ditch between the lake and field (Alan Bradford). 150 Pink-footed Geese >E over Langold Lake at 15:00, Little Owl at Carr & Oldcotes Road. (John Gallagher). Water Rail still showing at Cramfit at NAPT (Mick Clay).

21st December Feeding the birds at Langold Lake produced 2 Treereeper, 80 Greenfinch on sunflower crop along with 200 Rooks and Jackdaws plus Buzzard over second lake (Alan Bradford).

20th December At least 15 Waxwings in a garden on High Street, South Anston at 12:05, which then went > W into the estate (Mick Clay).

18th December 150 Pink-footed Geese >W over South Anston at 12:00. At Axle Lane were 71 Skylark and 5 Song Thrush (Mick Clay). At Roche Abbey were Grey Wagtail, 5 Greylag Geese >N, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 15 Teal (displaying) 3 Coal Tit, 2 Marsh Tit, Tawny Owl, Gadwall, 23 Mallard, 2 Heron, 7 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper, 3 Goldcrest, 5 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 2 Mistle Thrush, 4 Jay and 5 Bullfinch. On Thwaite House Farm Pond were 3 Snipe (John Gallagher). Pink-footed Geese low >E over South Anston in the dark (Mick Clay).

13th December 5 Waxwings reported from Lindrick Dale today (David Wright).

12th December At Langold Lake today were 30 Redwing, 15 Fieldfare, 2 Buzzard, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Nuthatch, 4 Brambling with 400 Greenfinch, 70 Siskin, 12 Red-legged Partridge, 2 Skylark, 3 Bullfinch and Great Spotted Woodpecker (John Gallagher).

11th December 8 Waxwings at Gildingwells Road,Woodsetts and 2 at High Street South Anston (Mick Clay).

8th December At NAPT today were Water Rail showing well in Cramfit Dike, also Brambling and Sparrowhawk (Mick Clay). Later here, single Water Rail (again) & Green Woodpecker (Geoff & Lyn Facer). 10 Waxwings around Magnolia Close, South Anston early morning. (Andy Murray). At 10:15 NAPT held c25 Waxwings, which flew towards Church Lane, Dinnington. Also 1 Redshank in stream close to the Church Lane entrance (Geoff Facer).

7th December Waxwing calling in fog and Little Grebe coming to bread at Turnerwood (Bob Stevens). 8 Red-legged Partridge coming to seed in a Throapham garden this morning (Andy Hirst).


Little Grebe, Chesterfield Canal6th December Along the Chesterfield Canal from Anston to Turnerwood were 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 12 Moorhen, 14 Blackbirds, 25 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Willow Tits and 2 Marsh Tits. At Turnerwood were at least 3 Brambling, 50 Fieldfare, 20 Redwing, Song Thrush, 2 Mute Swan and m Mandarin. Towards Shireoaks, a Kingfisher (Mick Clay). 12 Red-legged Partridge in a Throapham garden most of the day (Andy Hirst).

5th December Along the Chesterfield Canal between Cinderhill and Stiffs (Top Locks) were m Mandarin, 54 Mallard, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Heron, 2 Kestrel, 3 Coal Tit, Marsh Tit, Willow Tit, 16 Blue Tit, 20 Great Tit, 8 Long-tailed Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Kingfisher, 2 Jay, 3 Goldcrest, 3 Brambling, 2 Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Siskin, 7 Robin, Reed Bunting, 7 Dunnock, 12 Wren, 8 Goldfinch, 5 Greenfinch, Grey Wagtail, 14 Tree Sparrow, 30 Chaffinch and 7 Yellowhammer (Fieldfare, Redwing & Blackbird in abundance) (John Gallagher). At Turnerwood a Barn Owl hunting (Bob Stevens).

3rd December A dead Barn Owl was found in stable near South Anston today-no doubt a casualty of the weather (Alan Platts per Mick Clay).

29th November In the dark at Thurcroft Pit Top were 2 Woodcock & 2 Snipe (John Gallagher).

Wintry NAPT28th November A snowy (& cold-minus 8 degrees c ) NAPT produced little save for 14 Blackbird, Water Rail, 8 Bullfinch, Snipe, 3 Reed Bunting and 7 Common Gull (bit of a movement). Kings Wood Corner however produced f Pintail >N, which may have risen from Roche Abbey and possibly dropped in to Sandbeck?, 2 Raven >W and 5 more Common Gull >W (Andy Hirst). Langold Lake was 95% frozen so a concentration of wildfowl in the ice free patch produced 2 pairs of Pochard, 60 Gadwall, 149 Coot, 36 Tufted Duck, 3m and 2 f Wigeon, just 6 Mallard, a single Great Crested Grebe and 4 Mute Swan (Andy Hirst & John Gallagher). In Reins Plantation, Firbeck were 2 Marsh Tit, Coal Tit, 13 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Blue Tit, 5 Great Tit, 2 Robin, 6 Blackbird, Song Thrush, 4 Wren, 3 Siskin, 4 Bullfinch, 2 Treecreeper, 4 Nuthatch, 2 Goldcrest & 2 Woodcock (John Gallagher). 27th November Along First Lane were 2 Buzzard, 2 Raven, 12 House Sparrow, 14 Yellowhammer and 10 Grey Partridge (Mick Clay). At Langold Lake today were 32 Tufted Duck, 70 Gadwall, single Pochard, 80 Canada Goose, Buzzard, c100 Coot and 49 Moorhen (Alan Bradford). A walk down Rackford Lane to Lindrick, back Via Anston Stones Wood produced 4 Kestrel, single Buzzard, 4 Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, c30 Fieldfare, a flock c70 Chaffinch, c25 Lapwing over, 5 Golden Plover plus 3 Jay (Andy Murray).

26th November At Brown Bailey's today were 1m and 7f Goosander (Alan Bradford).

24th November At Langold Lake today were 34 Tufted Duck, 80 Black-headed Gull, 260 Canada Geese, 58 Gadwall, 24 Moorhen, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Pochard, 2 Teal, 2 Wigeon, 2 Mute Swan, Heron, 80 Coot, 35 Siskin, and a probable 6 Whooper Swans circled over over the car park before heading off >S (Alan Bradford).

21st November A party of c20? Waxwing around Soucheage Hill/ Lindrick Golf Course today (James Clay).

20th November at Axle Lane were 500 Golden Plover. At Roche Abbey were 30 Fieldfare, Treecreeper, 4 Nuthatch, 5 Goldcrest, 2 Coal Tit, 5 Siskin, 2 Yellowhammer, 5 Buzzard and 2 Little Grebe. Lingodell held 2 imm. Cormorant (John Gallagher). At Langold Lake were 8 Wigeon, 2 Pochard, f Goosander, 25 Tufted Ducks, a new record of 153 Gadwall, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 28 Moorhen, 10 Siskin and 2 Lesser Redpoll >S (Mick Clay).

19th November At NAPT today were Water Rail at Cramfit, 6 Bullfinch, Snipe, 15 Blackbird, 18 Redwing and 71 Black-headed Gull. At Langold Lake, highlights included Little Grebe, pair of Pochard, 2m 1f Wigeon, 2 Nuthatch, Brambling with 300 Greenfinch & new pair of Mute Swans, which have ousted the resident single Mute Swan. Carlton Lake held 2 imm. Mute Swans (John Gallagher).

18th November 50 Pink-footed Geese >W over North Anston (James Clay).

14th November At NAPT today were 21 Mallard, 4 Lapwing, 2 Pied Wagtail, 2 Green Woodpecker, Skylark, 6 Black-headed Gull, 12 Goldfinch, 3 Meadow Pipit, 10 Blackbird, 6 Redwing, 3 Dunnock, 4 Wren, Blue Tit, Bullfinch & Jack Snipe in overflow field. (John Gallagher). At Carr in set a side were 10 Tree Sparrow, 8 Reed Bunting, 2 Brambling and Buzzard.. At Thurcroft Pit Top were 8 Reed Bunting (Mick Clay).

13th November At Langold Lake today were 109 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 5 Great Crested Grebe, Kingfisher, 3 Kestrel and 2 Buzzard (Mick Clay).

7th November 5 Buzzard from Kings Wood Corner this afternoon. Letwell Sewage Works held 50 Yellowhammer, 10 Greenfinch, 4 Reed Bunting, 3 Song Thrush and a Buzzard over. Lingodell produced 69 Lapwing, Buzzard, 189 Black-headed Gull and a Common Gull (Andy Hirst & John Gallagher).

5th November Along the Chesterfield Canal were single Brambling with a flock of c65 Chaffinch feeding in a ploughed field near Turnerwood. 6 Tree Sparrow on the feeders in a Turnerwood Garden, c20 Goldfinch around the Turnerwood area. 1 Little Grebe near Toplocks, 56 Mallard between Shireoaks and Kiveton Bridge, 7 Siskin at Stiff's and 2 Marsh Tit between Turnerwood and Hawk's Wood (Brian Chambers).

31st October A foggy start at NAPT produced 2 Golden Plover on the top plateau, plus 14 Grey Partridge and 6 Snipe, with Brambling over and 2 Grey Wagtail. Langold Lake held 130 Coot, 39 Mallard, 8 Tufted Duck, a record breaking 146 Gadwall, 15 Moorhen, 6 Great Crested Grebe, single Mute Swan and Wigeon. Hodsock produced 54 and 134 Pink-footed Geese >N and >SW, 100 Black-headed Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 100 Meadow Pipit, 7 Tree Sparrow, Lesser Redpoll >S and 30 Fieldfare >SW (Andy Hirst). Stubble at Thorpe Salvin produced c100+ Skylark, 2 Buzzard, 13 Grey Partridge and c400 Woodpigeon (Mick Clay and Andy Hirst). A site within the square produced a single Long-eared Owl (Andy Hirst and Mick Clay)-although the highlight of the weekend was an adult Yellow-legged Gull at Lingodell (John O'Malley and Mick Clay), with a probable immature bird also. 2 Little Owl at the end of Rackford Lane again (Dave Thornley).

27th October At Roche Abbey today were 70 Fieldfare, 4 Marsh Tit, c20 Long-tailed Tit, 6 Bullfinch, 20 Siskin, 24 Teal and 2 Jay over (Andy Hirst). The end of Rackford Lane held 2 Little Owl, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and 12 Grey Partridge. Swinston Hill Wood produced 10 Goldcrest (Andy Murray).

25th October c100 Pink-footed Geese >NW over Woodsetts this afternoon (Andy Murray).

24th October c75 Golden Plover >N over Throapham, plus m Goshawk at a site within the square (Andy Hirst). Around Thorpe Salvin were Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 60+ Fieldfare, 50+ Skylark and 30 Linnet (Andy Murray).

23rd October Great White Egret reported from Tommy Flockton's Marsh, although not seen subsequently (John Gallagher). f Goosander >W, 2 Snipe, Siskin, Lesser Redpoll and 3 Reed Bunting recorded during subsequent search (Andy Hirst & Mick Clay). With Mute Swan, 4 Cormorant and c70 Mallard over Kiveton Pit Top (Mick Clay, John Gallagher and Andy Hirst). 16 Skylark >S over NAPT plus 6 Mallard, 16 Black-headed Gull, 3 Moorhen, Siskin, 16 Golden Plover >N and 30 Starling (Andy Hirst). c300 Pink-footed Geese >S over Dog Kennel Hill, Anston (Andy Murray).

18th October At Langold Lake today were 8 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Cormorant, 1 Heron, 1 Mute Swan, 10 Canada Goose, 1 pair of Wigeon, 85 Gadwall, 19 Mallard, a pair of Pochard, 13 Tufted Duck, 1m Kestrel, 29 Moorhen, 104 Coot, 35 Black-headed Gull plus 4 Nuthatch & 100 Siskin (Geoff & Lyn Facer).

14th October Brambling and 100 Skylarks >S over Axle Lane (Mick Clay)-Belated News... Wood Sandpiper over Turnerwood on 14/8/10 (Bob Stevens per Mick Clay).

12th October >E over Axle Lane today were 100 Pink-footed Geese (Mick Clay).

10th October Early morning at Kings Wood Corner produced 6 vocal Buzzard, 4 Song Thrush, 3 Pied Wagtail >S, 4 Brambling in game cover, 25 Chaffinch, 344 Redwing >SW, 12 Lesser Black-backed Gull >SW, 12 Siskin >S, 57 Starling >SW, 150 Woodpigeon, 2 Jay, 4 Greenfinch, 2 Reed Bunting >N, Lesser Redpoll >S, 2 Sparrowhawk and 2 Tree Sparrow. Tinkerhole Dike was quiet except for 9 Blue Tit, 20 Redwing, 3 Pied Wagtail >S, 20 Rook, Yellowhammer, Bullfinch, Brambling >S and 3 Siskin >S (Andy Hirst). A quick wander around NAPT revealed 2 Chiffchaff, Jay, 4 Song Thrush, c50 Black-headed Gull, 28 Skylark on top plateau, Green Woodpecker, 18 Cormorant >N, 2 Willow Tit and 3 Lapwing. Langold Lake held 15 Tufted Duck, 187 Coot, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 88 Gadwall, a pair of Wigeon, Mute Swan, 45 Moorhen and a Little Grebe (Andy Hirst & Mick Clay). In addition to NAPT were Wheatear, Heron, 2 Grey Wagtail and Snipe (John Gallagher). Harry Crofts Quarry produced 240 Pink-footed Geese >W, 18 Cormorant >N (same as NAPT) , 2 Sparrowhawk, 3 Fieldfare & 24 Grey Partridge (John Gallagher & Andy Murray).

9th October highlight of the weekend was an Osprey >S over Langold Pit Top at 14:00 (John Gallagher).

6th October Female Merlin present early morning at Axle Lane (Mick Clay).

5th October Early morning at Dinnington Marsh produced; 10 Robin, 350 Woodpigeon, 7 Mallard, 8 Willow Tit, 17 Siskin in several small flocks, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jay, Chiffchaff, Grey Wagtail, 20 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Grey Partridge, 5 Bullfinch, 2 Redwing, Lesser Redpoll, Cormorant >S & 4 Swallow >S. NAPT produced 10 Song Thrush, 7 Blackbird, 2 Chiffchaff, 34 Black-headed Gull, 8 Skylark >S, 5 Bullfinch, 32 Goldfinch, Grey Wagtail, Buzzard, Grey Partridge and 6 Siskin >S. Roche Abbey produced 2 Marsh Tit, 30 Teal, Little Grebe and 3 Siskin (Andy Hirst). At Langold Lake a high number of wildfowl were present; 182 Coot, 35 Mallard, 18 Tufted Duck, Mute Swan, Grey Wagtail, 41 Moorhen, 83 Gadwall, 8 Great Crested Grebe, Heron, Little Grebe, pair of Wigeon, 83 Canada Geese and 2 Buzzard over (Andy Hirst & Brian Chambers). At Axle Lane the Merlin still hunting Linnets, also 150 Linnets, 150 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Common Gull and Fieldfare >W (Mick Clay).

4th October Early morning at Axle Lane produced a Merlin chasing Linnets (Mick Clay).

NAPT filling up3rd October Water levels have risen at NAPT, producing 44 Mallard, Curlew >S, 12 Black-headed Gull and 2 Lapwing. A walk in the rain produced 4 Blackbird, 3 Swallow >S, 16 Meadow Pipit, 5 Pheasant, 4 Song Thrush, Bullfinch, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, 3 Grey Partridge and Kestrel (Andy Hirst).

2nd October At Dinnington Marsh today were 6 Song Thrush and 2 Redwing >S, also 4 Chiffchaff . At NAPT were 12 Song Thrush >S, Willow Tit, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Snipe, 2 Lapwing, 3 Bullfinch and large movement of Meadow Pipits >S. At Axle Lane a m Wheatear near the wall (Mick Clay). Cramfit Brook, nr HospiceTommy Flockton's s Marsh held; 15 Mallard, 9 Mistle Thrush, 6 Pied Wagtail and Kingfisher. Axle Lane produced 350 Linnet, m Sparrowhawk & 4 Cormorant >S. Thurcroft Marsh revealed 4 Bullfinch, Willow Tit, 4 Chiffchaff, 3 Jay and Green Woodpecker, whilst Thurcroft Pit Top produced Cormorant >S, Teal, Green Woodpecker, 2f & m Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 5 Swallow >S, 60 Goldfinch, 35 Meadow Pipit, 30 Skylark plus 27 Skylark >S (John Gallagher).

27th September An hour and a half in the drizzle at NAPT today produced; 2 Chiffchaff, Bullfinch, 6 Blue Tit, Treecreeper, 8 Blackbird and 5 Song Thrush (bit of an influx), c15 Meadow Pipit, 4 Willow Tit, 7 Dunnock, 7 Lesser Black-backed Gull >S, 106 Golden Plover >N, 12 Goldfinch, single Jay (unusual here, square wide influx), 2 Lesser Redpoll, 13 Collared Dove and a Skylark >S (Andy Hirst).

26th September From Axle Lane today were 4 Cormorant >S, 11 Swallow >S, 25 Pink-footed Geese >E and juv. Peregrine unsuccessfully hunting Grey Partridges. Kings Wood Corner revealed 4 Swallow >S, 70 House Martin, 8 Jay, 11 Greylag Geese >E, 10 Buzzard, Sparrowhawk & Kestrel. On Dinnington Marsh were single Curlew in field towards Brampton Common & 23 Pied Wagtails. Green Sandpiper dropped into Harry Crofts Quarry at dusk (John Gallagher & Andy Murray).

23rd September Juv Hobby hunting Linnets at Axle Lane and 2 Buzzard feeding on worms at Penny Piece (Mick Clay).

22nd September Early morning at Axle Lane produced juv. Peregrine with Woodpigeon (Mick Clay).

20th September At Langold Lake today were Little Grebe, 5ad and 4 juv. Great Crested Grebe, Heron, f Wigeon, 48 Gadwall, 9 Tufted Duck, Kingfisher & Grey Wagtail (Geoff & Lyn Facer).

19th September A quick early morning visit at NAPT produced 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Meadow Pipit >S, Reed Bunting, 3-4 Song Thrush and several Blackbird (Andy Hirst). The walk this morning was changed to a tour around the square because of the weather. Langold Lake held 188 Coot, 18 Moorhen, Mute Swan, 7 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Tufted Duck, 65 Gadwall, 37 Mallard, f Shoveler, f Wigeon, 4 Jay, Kingfisher, 2 Grey Wagtail and 12 Snipe >SW. Hodsock produced 40+ Goldfinch, 50+ Linnet, c30 Chaffinch, c50 Meadow Pipit and c20 Pied Wagtail (Andy Hirst, Mick Clay, Chris Lilley and Andy Murray) Plus a Redshank at Harry Crofts Quarry (Andy Hirst, Mick Clay & Chris Lilley).

18th September Over Axle Lane were 40 Pink-footed Geese >E, Buzzard and Yellow Wagtail >S. Over NAPT were 39 Pink-footed Geese >E, Hobby >NE and 5 Corn Bunting >S plus 123 Meadow Pipit. A Hobby >S over Lindrick (Mick Clay).

17th September Early morning at Axle Lane produced a juv. Hobby, 2 Kestrel, 500 Linnet, 120 Golden Plover and 3 Yellow Wagtail >S plus 52 Skylark and 125 House Martin. Over NAPT were 2 Buzzard.(Mick Clay).

13th September A juv. Hobby hunting over Axle Lane at 17:30 today (John Gallagher).

12th September Early morning at NAPT produced 22 Mallard, 8 Chiffchaff, 6 Greenfinch, 3 Grey Partridge, Green Woodpecker, 2 Reed Bunting, 16 Meadow Pipit, Sparrowhawk, 4 Bullfinch, 3 Willow Tit, single Jay plus Lesser Whitethroat on the edge of the overflow field. A walk from Woodsetts to Carlton produced 100+ Lesser Black-backed Gull, 25+ Lapwing, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Willow Tit, 5 Buzzard, 4 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk plus Hobby catching Dragonflies near the horse livery (all Andy Murray).

30th August Early morning at Axle Lane were 300 Black-headed Gulls and 51 Golden Plover. In the hedgerow by Kiveton Hall Farm were 5 Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and 3 Whitethroat (Mick Clay).

21st August At Dinnington Marsh, 2 Spotted Flycatcher by the big boulders, plus reeling Grasshopper Warbler (Andy Murray). Langold Lake produced 2 Green Woodpecker, 2 Heron, 4 Swift, Kingfisher, 2 Little Grebe, 1m & 5f Gadwall, 6 juv. Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail & 6 juv Great Crested Grebe from 3 broods (John Gallagher).

14th August Early morning Kings Wood corner highlights included Tree Pipit >N, Whimbrel >N, c100 Lesser Black-backed Gull >S-SW, 4 Buzzard, imm f Sparrowhawk, c320 Swallow, 220 House Martin, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Nuthatch, Yellow Wagtail >N and Collared Dove >S. At NAPT were 36 Black-headed Gull, 2ad and 3 small juv. Moorhen, Chiffchaff, c30 Swallow >S, Kestrel, 7 Swift 30, House Martin >S, 2 Snipe >N, and 24 Mallard, although the highlight was a Skua sp >S (probably Arctic) (Andy Hirst, John Gallagher and Alan Bradford). >S over Harry Crofts Quarry were Green Sandpiper and Redshank. At Dinnington Marsh were 13 Chiffchaff, 19 Willow Warbler, 6 Whitethroat, 2 Blackcap, 3 Willow Tit, 10 Bullfinch, 2 juv. Sparrowhawk and juv. Hobby which caught a Swallow (Mick Clay).

21st July Single Woodcock flushed from Dinnington Marsh, also 3 Buzzard, Kestrel, Little Owl and 15 Mistle Thrush (Andy Murray).

19th July A site in SK58 produced hunting Long-eared Owl and 2 Barn Owl (Andy Murray).

18th July Very early this morning walk Dinington Marsh to Thurcroft Marsh produced 7 Kestrel, 3 Reed Buntings, Grey Heron, Blackcap, Green Woodpecker, 8 Bullfinch, 5 Willow Tit plus Greenfinch, Yellowhammer and Linnet. Single Hare and Roe Deer at Thurcroft Pit Top (Andy Murray). Good numbers of Swallow, Swift and House Martin >S over NAPT and Harry Crofts Quarry (Andy Hirst).

17th July Late evening at Dinnington Marsh produced single Grasshopper Warbler 'reeling' (Andy Murray). Thurcroft Marsh, produced Heron, Song Thrush & Turtle Dove. Thurcroft Pit Top held Green Woodpecker (ad. & 3 juv.), Sedge Warbler, 3 juv Pied Wagtail, Reed Bunting (ad& 4 juv) and a family of Kestrel. At NAPT a Kingfisher was recorded (John Gallagher).

14th July hunting Barn Owl showing well at Dinnington Marsh, also 2 Kestrels, 2 Reed Bunting, 4 Bullfinch, 6 Willow Tit, 4 Yellowhammer and 2 Whitethroat. Thurcroft Marsh held Green Woodpecker with large numbers of Swift over Thurcroft Pit Top (Andy Murray).

11th July At Brampton Common today were juv Yellow Wagtail, 2 Common Tern, family of Kestrels & Hobby drifting >S towards Axle Lane. Langold (top) Lake held Tufted Duck & 6 ducklings. These in addition to f & 5 ducklings on main lake. Lindrick Dale held Kingfisher (John Gallagher). A report of 2 Red Kite reported over the western end of South Anston mid afternoon. Plenty of Swift and several Yellow Wagtail off Dog Kennel Lane, by Park Farm later (per Andy Murray, no sign despite a thorough search Andy Hirst).

Tufted Duck family, Langold Holt6th July Tommy Flockton's Marsh produced 2 Green Woodpecker, 3 Mistle Thrush, 3ad + 3juv Lapwing & 8 Heron (at least 4 juvs.) (John Gallagher). At Langold Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebe (4ad + 2juvs), Heron, 8 Tufted Duck (1m 2f + 5juvs), 4 Common Sandpiper (maybe 2ad + 2juvs.) and Common Tern (Geoff & Lyn Facer).

4th July The first Golden Plover over Axle Lane today (Mick Clay).

3rd July Langold Lake produced f Tufted Duck & 5 ducklings, Kingfisher, Great Crested Grebe & 2 juvs. Langold Holt held 2 Buzzard, Heron, Green Woodpecker, f Tufted Duck & 7 ducklings and juv Little Grebe. One of our new Barn Owl boxes near Langold Lake held adult & 2 juv. Barn Owls (John Gallagher).

29th June Dinnington Marsh held 2 Kestrel, 3 Buzzard, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls over, single Common Tern, 3 Bullfinch, 2 Greenfinch, 4 Reed Bunting 3 Whitethroat and really good numbers of Swallow, Swift and House Martins (Andy Murray). Quail calling by Turnerwood in the field before the railway crossing footpath (per Bob Stevens).

Kestrel ad & juv Paul Rigg27th June Anston Stones Wood held 5 Blackcap, 4 Chiffchaff and 2 Treecreeper In Lindrick Dale a Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Blackcap, 5 Chiffchaff and Treecreeper. The Chesterfield Canal from Stiffs to South Anston produced 7 Blackcap,12 Chiffchaff, Garden Warbler, 3 Whitethroat, Treecreeper, 2 Grey Wagtails feeding young and 2 Buzzard (Mick Clay).

A walk from Woodsetts to Carlton produced 4 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, single Sparrowhawk, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 3 Bullfinch, 8 Yellowhammer, 6 Linnet, 2 Mistle Thrush, Great Spotted Woodpecker and at least 15 Skylark plus good numbers of Swifts and Swallows (Andy Murray).

25th June Hewett Arms produced single Common Tern, 15 Greylag Goose (2-3 families), 31 Canada Geese, 19 Mallard, 12 Coot, 2 Heron plus many Swallow, House Martin & Swift feeding (Brian Chambers).

22nd June At a site to the West of SK58 a Barn Owl with food going back to a nest box, also Little Owl and Tawny Owls calling (Mick Clay).

Dinnington Marsh produced 9 Lapwing and at least 2 juvs. and Buzzard. At Brampton Common were 4 juv Kestrels a nest box and 30 Lapwing (inc. several juvs.).At Common Road were 2 Little Owl and juv Kestrels in Owl box at Penny Piece (Mick Clay). 8th May The NAPT open hide produced single Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, 13ad and 11juv Lapwing with 5 birds sat on nests, 6 Black-headed Gull & 3 Swallow. 2 Lesser Whitethroat heard (Brian Chambers). Wheatear m and Ringed Plover still present early afternoon (Andy Hirst).

5th May Today at the end of Rackford Lane through the horse paddock were many Yellowhammer, 2 Grey Partridge, 2 Skylark, single Wheatear and Buzzard, 2 Whitethroat plus Little Owl (Andy Murray). At Dinnington Marsh today the Cuckoo was heard. At NAPT single Ringed Plover & Redshank (Geoff Facer).

4th May Dinnington Marsh held Grasshopper Warbler and Cuckoo. NAPT produced hunting Barn Owl (Andy Murray).

3rd May Hodsock produced 2 Buzzard, Kestrel, 6 Pied Wagtail, 4 Yellowhammer, c70 House Martin and 20 Swallow as well as 20 Swift (Andy Hirst). At Axle Lane this evening was a single Common Tern (Paul Rigg).

Ring Ouzel later flew over towards college fields (Andy Hirst). At Thurcroft Marsh today were single Cuckoo, Grasshopper Warbler, 9 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 7 Whitethroat, 3 Swift & a Sparrowhawk. 28th April Along the Chesterfield Canal , a m Mandarin, of note behind Turnerwood, across railway track were a good number of Yellowhammer, 20+ Swallows plus reeling Grasshopper Warbler heard not seen (Andy Murray). At Axle Lane today were Common Tern on the ponds, 2m Wheatear on the wall, YWheatear Axle Laneellow Wagtail & Sand Martin >W, 4 Whitethroat & Corn Bunting (Mick Clay).

27th April 2 Yellow Wagtail at Lingodell Farm today (John Gallagher). Axle Lane produced Common Tern on the ponds, Corn Bunting and Little Owl on the wall, Yellow Wagtail and 4 Whitethroat (Mick Clay).

26th April In Anston Stones Wood today were 11 Chiffchaff, 15 Blackcap, 2 Willow Warbler, 4 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper, 14 Robin, 2 Song Thrush, 2 Mistle Thrush, 11 Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 27 Wren, 15 Blue Tit, 22 Great Tit, 8 Long-tailed Tit, Marsh Tit, 4 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest, 4 Bullfinch,17 Chaffinch and 73 Rook nests. NAPT held 3 Redshank,16 Lapwing plus 3 nests and 16 juvs, Sedge Warbler, 4 Swifts and 6 House Martins. Harry Crofts produced 2 Little Owl and 3 Wheatear (Mick Clay). Little Owl using the nest box along Rackford Lane and Tree SparSwallows Stonerow in adjacent hedge (Dave Thornley).

24th April 2-3 Grasshopper Warbler in the triangle of waste ground near the Lordens hotel, Dinnington on the corner of Leys Lane and Lodge Lane. Also Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Blackcap. A possible Garden Warbler also. A Grasshopper Warbler along the small lane at the side of Firbeck Hall, 2 Tree Sparrow at Letwell and Common Lane near Laughton Common.

21st April At Axle Lane today 2m Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail >N, Whitethroat and 2 Corn Bunting (Mick Clay). By Stone Farm were 8 Nuthatch together in one Ash tree, a pair of Bullfinch, 8 Wren together in a clump of Brambles carrying nesting material. 12 Swallow building nests in the barn, single Kestrel, Buzzard, 4m Blackcap and 4 Tree Sparrow with nesting material (Brian Waugh). Dinnington Marsh produced 2 Willow Tit, f Sparrowhawk, 6 Yellowhammer, m Whitethroat, 2 Pied Wagtail & Redshank (John Gallagher).

Common Sandpiper Langold Lake20th April Early morning at Axle Lane produced m Wheatear on the main path,15 Sand Martin and 9 Swallows >N, 5 Reed Bunting and single Corn Bunting (Mick Clay). 19th April At NAPT a m Redstart by the hospice gateway. On the scrape was single Little Ringed Plover, a pair of Lapwing with 4 juvs. and 4 birds still sitting (Geoff Facer). Redstart still present early evening (Andy Hirst, Mick Clay, John Gallagher, Andy & Danny Murray).17:00 at Tommy Flockton's Marsh, a Red Kite circled, mobbed by 2 Crows then flew NW. 11th April At Red Lane, Carlton in Lindrick were 60 Sand Martin, 2 Green Woodpeckers and Great Spotted Woodpecker. NAPT produced Redshank, 5 Lapwing nests, Yellow Wagtail, 2 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff and Blackcap (Mick Clay).

10th April At Thurcroft Marsh today were 2 Blackcap, 5 Chiffchaff, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Robin & 2 Little Grebe. Thurcroft Pit Top held Green Sandpiper (John Gallagher). m Roe Deer walking behind South Anston grave yard, on the path towards the quarry (Keith Naylor). At Dinnington Marsh today were 2 Redshank, 6 Lapwing, Buzzard, 7 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff, Whitethroat and 4 Bullfinch. Kings Wood Corner produced 10 Buzzard, 4 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, Hawfinch, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Green Woodpecker. At Red Lane in Carlton in Lindrick were 3 Buzzard, 3 Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker, 2 Tree Sparrow and 20 Sand Martin. A m Yellow Wagtail at Axle Lane (Mick Clay).

9th April 2 Redshank at NAPT today (Dave Thornley). Around Stone Farm this evening were 4 Swallows and 6 Sand Martins around the barns. Kingfisher fishing off a large Bamboo plant at the side of the bridge over Maltby Beck. Kestrel hunting fields towards Stubbing Wood (Brian Waugh).

Langold Holt held 3 Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Song Thrush, 6 Goldfinch, pair of Bullfinch, Woodcock, 2 Buzzard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Coal Tit & Marsh Tit (John Gallagher). 21st March At NAPT this morning were single Oystercatcher and 2 Little Ringed Plover (Ivan Keeton) also Oystercatcher circling over Axle Lane (James Clay). 20th March At Slade Hills today were c75 Yellowhammer, with c40 Chaffinch and c15 Reed Bunting feeding on cut down Maize game cover (Andy Hirst & John Gallagher). 08:30 at NAPT produced a pair of Wheatear sat on the roof of the hide plus 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Shoveler,14 Lapwing and 5 Snipe (John Gallagher & Mick Clay).

14th March 07:00 at NAPT produced Little Ringed Plover on the scrape, also good numbers of Lapwing, Reed Bunting, Black-headed Gull, 2 Kestrel, a pair of Shoveler, 2 Snipe and good numbers of Skylarks by the top scrape (Andy Murray).At Kings Wood today were 2 Hawfinch, 3 Marsh Tit, 6 Nuthatch, 2 Tawny Owl calling and 14 Buzzard (Mick Clay & John Gallagher). At Thurcroft Pit Top today were Green Woodpecker, 2 Mistle Thrush, Snipe & Jack Snipe. Langold Pit Top at dusk revealed roosting Buzzard, 3 Tawny Owl calling, Woodcock, Little Owl & 3 Snipe (John Gallagher).

13th March Amongst wildfowl at Langold Lake today were 10 Great Crested Grebe, the Red-necked Grebe and 2m Gadwall (Geoff Facer). At Buckwood Farm today were 20 Tree Sparrow & 2 Song Thrush. Langold Lake held 8 Great Crested Grebe, f Goosander & Red-necked Grebe. Carlton Lake revealed 4 pair of Goosander, 4 Greylag Geese, 2 pairs of Tufted Duck & Heron. NAPT, produced single Little Ringed Plover, 5 Snipe, a pair of Shoveler & 12 Lapwing. Tommy Flockton's Marsh held 12 Teal, 2 Heron, Kingfisher, single Gadwall, 14 Moorhen, 12 Mallard & 2 Pied Wagtail (John Gallagher & Geoff Facer).

11th March At Thornbury Hill today were 2 pairs of Red-legged Partridge, 3 Buzzards, 4 Long-tailed Tits, 4 Carrion Crows, 2 separate flocks of Woodpigeonnumbering 50+ in each flock and a Tawny Owl sat in large Ash tree. From Stone village, a walk towards Kings Wood produced 3 Kestrel, 3 Buzzard, Little Owl , 100+ Rooks in large flock on newly ploughed field. 2 small flocks of Long-tailed Tits near the footbridge over Maltby Beck along with several Dunnocks, Robins and Great Tits (Brian Waugh).

9th March Early morning at Axle Lane produced 37 Whooper Swans >N, also 85 Golden Plover and good numbers of Skylark (Mick Clay). 10:00-13:00 A dog walk around Langold Lake and through Dyscarr Woods produced (despite the presence of a film crew) 2 Tree Sparrows, 4 Chaffinch, 6 Robin & 6 Great Crested Grebe (Brian Waugh). A walk around Thurcroft Pit Top produced 3m Reed Bunting, 1 pair of Mallard, 10 Woodpigeon & 1 Hare. On the path to & from Carr were a pair of Chaffinch, f Bullfinch, 2 Robin, 2m Blackbird. In Carr village were 2 Kestrel & a Buzzard harassed by Carrion Crow (Paul Rigg).

At Langold Lake between 08:30-12:00 produced; Red-necked Grebe still present and showing well against the bank side to 4 feet from viewing point.

Large numbers of Canada Geese. 30-40 Fieldfares in grassland at the side of the lake and two Mistle Thrush mixed in. 30 + Goldfinch flock on Alders, 12 Long-tailed Tits and 3 Kestrels. Lots of Robins Blue Tits and Great Tits, Blackbirds also in good numbers (Brian Waugh). Mid morning at the top end of Carlton Lake were 3 pairs of Goosander, they flew off towards Langold Lake (Keith Naylor).

Barn owl NAPT Paul Rigg7th March At Thurcroft Pit Top today were m & f Stonechat. Kings Wood Corner produced the highest ever count of 22 Buzzard in the air at one time, with 4 Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

At Langold Lake the Red-necked Grebe was entertaining several visiting birders. Carlton Lake held 4 pairs of Goosander. Over Brampton were 6 Buzzard. NAPT held a f Stonechat, large number of Reed Bunting here (8), 24 Black-headed Gull on scrape with 2 Common Gull (Mick Clay, Andy Hirst & Brian Chambers). A Little Ringed Plover put in a brief appearance here early morning (Andy Hirst & Andy Murray). Late afternoon at Thurcroft Pit Top was a single Little Ringed Plover-may well have been the NAPT bird from earlier (John O'Malley).

6th March An ad Long-eared Owl was found in an emaciated state at Thurcroft Pit Top. It was picked up and taken to the vets at Dinnington. Unfortunately it was too far gone and died on the table. Also on Thurcroft Pit Top were 5 Reed Bunting, 4 Meadow Pipit, 6 Skylark, 2 m Stonechat, Green Sandpiper & 3 Snipe. Langold Lake held 3 pairs Goosander & Red-necked Grebe still at Langold Lake & showing well . Buckwood Farm, Langold produced 2 Jay. (2 Barn Owl regularly seen in field adjacent to farm, per farmer.) 5th March The Little Egret was still at Carlton Lake at 16:15 on the south side of lake in a field (John Gallagher).

4th March 17:30 at the Terrace/ Low Farm at Carr a Barn Owl carrying prey pursued and harassed by a loud Kestrel. At 18:20, 2 Barn Owls hunting in field adjacent to Ramper Road, Carr, also Little Owl & a pair of Tawny Owl calling (John Gallagher). Around Laughton pond and Roche Abbey 10:00-12:30;
2 Buzzards thermaling high, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Collared Doves, 2 Wren, a small flock (6) Long-tailed Tits, 2 Great Tits, 2 Blue Tits and probably 4 m Blackbirds (Brian Waugh).

3rd March Hot on the heels of our first Red-necked Grebe, was another first for the square today, not quite as glamorous, but greatly overdue-an ad. winter Little Egret at Carlton Lake (Keith Trow). Perched on the island, it then flew into a nearby field, before flying around the trees in an attempt to roost, where it was lost from view. Also around were 2 Heron and mixed thrush flock of mainly c50 Fieldfare & c20 Redwing (Andy Hirst, Alan Bradford & John Gallagher).

2nd March The Red-necked Grebe still present at Langold Lake (BirdGuides). Barn Owl hunting and Snipe over NAPT this evening (Andy Hirst, John Gallagher & Andy Murray).

1st March Early morning at Axle Lane produced 200 Pink-footed Geese >NW also 17 Skylark and 1 Corn Bunting all in song. Over Brampton Common were 100 Lapwing (Mick Clay).

28th February Late afternoon at Axle Lane were 100 Pink-footed Geese >W and 300 Golden Plover (Mick Clay).

27th February From Kings Wood this morning were 11 Buzzard. By Lingodell 6 Tree Sparrow, 20 Chaffinch, 15 Reed Bunting and 40 Yellowhammer. 5 Buzzard at Lamb Lane, Dinnington (Mick Clay). At NAPT today were a pair of Shoveler, Willow Tit, Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Snipe, 7 Lapwing, 45 Black-headed Gull, 34 Mallard & m Stonechat. Brampton Common produced Snipe, 6 Grey Partridge & Woodcock (John Gallagher). Ad. Red-necked Grebe still at Langold Lake, although harassed by many photographers! (Jan & Den Jarrold).

Highlights at a rainy Langold Lake were 2 pairs of Great Crested Grebe displaying and harassing the Red-necked Grebe. 3 f & 1m Pochard, Kingfisher, 2f & 1m Goosander, 40 Yellowhammer & 30 Goldfinch (John Gallagher). 25th February At NAPT today were 2m &1f Shoveler, 30 Mallard, 4 Lapwing, 10 Reed Bunting, 2 Willow Tit & 4 Bullfinch (John Gallagher). Barn Owl, Tawny Owl and Woodcock at Dinnington Marsh this evening (Mick Clay).

24th February Red-necked Grebe still present at Langold Lake at 13:00, towards the western end of the Lake. As well as the usual Canada Geese, Mallard, Moorhen, Coot, Tufted Duck, 2 Pochard, 2 Gadwall and 2 Buzzard (Nigel Butler). Kingfisher today at NAPT (Mick Clay).

23rd February On Langold Lake at 16:00 the Red-necked Grebe still present, a Peregrine over Langold Pit Top flew > Oldcotes, plus Jack Snipe in the rough field at the side of factories (Keith Trow).

22nd February At 18:05 Barn Owl on a fence post below one of our new nest boxes (John Gallagher).

21st February Early morning in the snow At Axle Lane produced 300 Skylark & 47 Golden Plover (Mick Clay). In the snow at Thurcroft Pit Top were Water Rail, 4 Reed Bunting & Meadow Pipit. Mid afternoon at Langold Pit Top were 2 Green Woodpecker, Lesser Redpoll with 9 Goldfinch & Red-necked Grebe on lake still (John Gallagher).

At Dewidales today were 2 Stonechat, 5 Yellowhammer & 3 Reed Bunting. Around the Butterfly House were 17 Chaffinch, 6 Backbird & Robin, 6 House Sparrow and 10 Tree Sparrow (Chris Lilley).

18th February At NAPT today were a pair of Shoveler on the pond by hospice access road, 2 pair of Mallard, 1m Kestrel, Moorhen, 2 Lapwing, Snipe, 12 Black-headed Gull, 3 Common Gull, Redwing , Willow Tit and a pair of Bullfinch (Geoff Facer).

14th February At the junction of Eastfield Lane and Kings Wood Lane were a large mixed finch flock, predominantly Chaffinch(c100), with 17 Reed Bunting, 4 Yellowhammer & Brambling. Firbeck was quiet with 2 Greylag Geese >S, 15 Herring Gull >N, Siskin, Heron, 2 Buzzard and Sparrowhawk Thornbury Hill was equally dull & quiet with 4 Buzzard the highlight. Little Grebe and 18 Teal were the high points at Roche Abbey, with Grey Wagtail, 2 Buzzard 23 Mallard and 6 Moorhen also present (Andy Hirst).

13th February At Kiveton Pit Top today were 2 Willow Tit, 6 Skylark, f Sparrowhawk, 3 Greylag Geese, 15 Mallard, 5 Chaffinch & 2 Reed Bunting. In the Kings Wood/ Lingodell area were 2 Brambling amongst the many Chaffinch. 100 Pink-footed Geese over N. Anston at 10:20 (John Gallagher) and what were probably the same 100 Pink-footed Geese over South Anston (Mick Clay). Over Thornbury Hill this morning were 8 Buzzard, plus Tawny Owl calling. Langold Lake held c6 Gadwall, 3 Great Crested Grebe, m Goosander and a Cormorant (Andy Hirst).

12th February At NAPT today were 4 Grey Partridge, 3 Teal, 10 Mallard, 26 Black-headed Gull, 4 Bullfinch, 2 Skylark, 2 Lapwing(on scrape-first birds back here), 2 Willow Tit & Kestrel. At Langold Lake were a pair of Pochard. Lingodell held Little Owl, 90 Black-headed Gull, 2 Common Gull, 3 Tufted Duck,12 Mallard, 85 Fieldfare, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard & single Coot ( John Gallagher). On Langold Lake today were 37 Mallard, 59 Coot, 22 Tufted Duck, 2m Pochard, a pair of Goosander, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 88 Canada Goose, 3 Gadwall, 19 Moorhen, c15 Siskin, Treecreeper, Nuthatch & Willow Tit. At Kings Wood Corner revealed ploughing in progress attracting: c100 Black-headed Gull, 1 Common Gull & 15 Pied Wagtail. Surrounding trees & hedges held 4000+ Woodpigeon. Feeding on the cropped maize by the corner with Eastfield Lane were c35 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling, 12 Yellowhammer and 6 Reed Bunting (Brian Chambers). Early evening at NAPT produced c10 Grey Partridge calling/ flying, single Barn Owl hunting and c45 Pink-footed Geese >NW in the dark (Andy Hirst & Mick Clay).

11th February Calling Little Owl plus Teal at Dinnington Marsh, as well as 2 Woodcock and 2 Snipe (Mick Clay). At Tommy Flockton's Marsh today were 4 Teal, 8 Mallard, 70 Fieldfare & Kingfisher (John Gallagher). At NAPT were 4 Snipe & Barn Owl (showing before dusk) (John Gallagher & Andy Murray).

9th February 2 Buzzards. 1 either side, landed in fields by the A57 at Axle Lane today at 11:05, plus
150+ Woodpigeon & 100+ Corvids (Kevin Bower).

8th February Single Barn Owl hunting along Dinnington Road, Woodsetts at 19:30 (Chris & Linda Lilley).

2nd February At Langold Lake today were 55 Mallard, 63 Coot, 39 Tufted Duck, 2 m Pochard, 1m Goosander, 4 Gadwall, 16 Moorhen, 2 Great Crested Grebe & 77 Canada Goose. On Carlton Lake were a pair of Goosander. Firbeck Hall produced c125 Canada Goose, 2 Greylag Goose &15 Coot. With 12 Mallard at Lingodell. Kings Wood Corner revealed 6 Buzzard, 1 Jay, 100+ Black-headed Gull feeding on ploughed fields, 1 Common Gull a flock of c25 Chaffinch, plus c200 Pink-footed Goose>W (Brian Chambers). At NAPT, a Barn Owl as well as 18 Linnet roosting in Gorse bushes. Also remains (feather & bone) of a Barn Owl in the overflow field (John Gallagher).

31st January 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bullfinch and 2 Tree Sparrow at Firbeck. Thornbury Hill produced 4 Buzzard, 6 Stock Dove, 6 Chaffinch, 7 Yellowhammer, c50 Woodpigeon, Nuthatch 2 Great Black-backed Gull >N and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker the highlight (Andy Hirst). Langold Lake produced c30 Coot, c100 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swan, 6 Common Gull, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Greylag Geese, 47 Tufted Duck and a m Pochard. Hodsock held c50 Pied Wagtail, 4 Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, Cormorant, Woodcock and c4 Buzzard. Oldcotes revealed a pair of Peregrines harassing Woodpigeons, c200 Linnet, several Song Thrush, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 25 Stock Dove, 3 Buzzard and a Great Black-backed Gull. Letwell Sewage works held c20 Yellowhammer, 4 Robin, 10 Chaffinch, 6 Red-legged Partridge, 4 Blackbird and 2 Reed Bunting. Mid-afternoon at NAPT produced calling Water Rail and Willow Tit (Andy Hirst & Mick Clay). A walk around Brampton Common produced 2 Kestrel, 2 Buzzard, Woodcock, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Snipe, 200 Fieldfare & 80 Starling (John Gallagher). A 2 hour walk along the Chesterfield Canal from Kiveton to Turnerwood produced; 28 Blue Tit, 17 Great Tit, 26 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Coal Tit, 1 Marsh Tit, 3 Goldcrest, 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker (1 drumming), 2 Jay, 29 Mallard, 14 Moorhen & 2 Mute Swan (Brian Chambers).

30th January Thurcroft Pit Top was very quiet with just 2 Snipe and single Jack Snipe of note. Over Thornbury Hill were 4 Buzzard, Common Gull, Great Spotted Woodpecker and 4 Stock Dove (Andy Hirst). Late pm produced a f Shoveler at a 90% frozen NAPT (Geoff Facer). At a site at dusk were single hunting Long-eared Owl and Woodcock (Andy Murray & Andy Hirst). A Little Owl at Carr this morning. At Carlton Lake were Kingfisher & Sparrowhawk. Lingodell held Little Owl, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 240 Fieldfare & 20 Redwing (John Gallagher). Along Common Lane was the Little Owl perched by the usual tree stump. At nearby NAPT were Kingfisher, 23 Magpie, 3 Grey Partridge & Common Gull over. The Chesterfield Canal between Kiveton & the South Anston path produced 13 Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit, Redwing, 3 Bullfinch and Jay (Brian Chambers).

29th January Goosander m still present on the scrape at NAPT this afternoon c14:00, also probable Harris Hawk (Dave Thornley).

28th January Kingfisher at Tommy Flockton's Marsh today. Early morning at NAPT m Goosander still on scrape and Water Rail in Cramfit Dike (Mick Clay). At NAPT at 17:15 m Goosander curled up on edge of scrape, plus Barn Owl over (John Gallagher).

27th January NAPT at dusk revealed 31 Mallard & m Goosander on the pond adjacent to the hospice road (John Gallagher).

26th January At Thurcroft Pit Top today were Green Sandpiper, 2 Snipe, 1 Jack Snipe & 8 Mallard. Brampton Common held c300 Starling, c300 Fieldfare, 1 Kestrel, 10 Mallard & 6 Long-tailed Tit (Brian Chambers). Circa 100 Pink-footed Geese >W over South Anston at 09:40 (Geoff Facer). Dusk at Dinnington Marsh produced a Barn Owl (John Gallagher).

25th January Flushed from Thurcroft Pit Top today (14.45) was a Lapland Bunting. It rose up and flew in the direction of Maltby (John O'Malley). It's been 18 years since the last (& only) records of 2 birds at NAPT on 18/10/92. Langold Lake is now almost ice-free and today's records included; 2 Mute Swan, 10 Canada Geese, 45 Mallard, 1 m Pochard, 20 Tufted Duck, 14 Moorhen, 80 Coot, 130 Black-headed Gull, 1 Common Gull, 30 Goldfinch and 20 Siskin (Geoff Facer). The f Blackcap frequenting Grange Farm Court, present again this morning (Nigel Butler).

24th January At Langold Lake today were c100 Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Treecreeper, 5 Robin, 3 Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit, 20 m Mallard, 22 f Mallard, 6 m Tufted Duck, 8 f Tufted Duck, c30 Coot, 12 Moorhen, feral Greylag Goose & 2 Mute Swan (Paul Rigg).

Mandarin m Paul Rigg17th January Lunchtime at Roche Abbey revealed 25 Pied Wagtail, 4 Buzzard, m Sparrowhawk, 2 Marsh Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 2 Nuthatch, 26 Teal, 42 Mallard, Little Grebe, Grey Wagtail, Jay, Goldcrest & Tawny Owl calling (John Gallagher). A m Mandarin showing really well on the basin in front of the houses at Turnerwood. Also present were 2 Mute Swan, 3 m, 2 f Mallard & 3 Moorhen. On the stretch between Turnerwood and Shireoaks were 12 m Mallards & 10 f Mallard, 6 Moorhens & 2 Mute Swans near Marina at Shireoaks (Paul Rigg).

At Letwell Sewage Works today were 150 Yellowhammers, 5 Tree Sparrows and 6 Reed Bunting. At Harry Crofts were 4 Little Owls and 2 Green Woodpeckers (Mick Clay).

16th January In Harry Crofts Quarry were 9 Grey Partridge, 3 Skylark, and 6 Yellowhammer. At NAPT were 15 Black-headed Gulls, single Common Gull, Moorhen, 2 Snipe, single Jack Snipe, 20 Mallard, Kingfisher and Green Woodpecker (Andy Hirst).

15th January A walk on a misty morning across Tommy Flockton's Marsh, then along the Chesterfield Canal produced at Tommy Flockton's Marsh 10 Moorhen, 15 Jackdaw, 5 Woodpigeon, 2 Fieldfare and a pair of Pheasant. By the canal 1 f Tufted Duck, 1 Kingfisher (near Albert Dock), 10m and 8f Mallard, 3 Coot, 8 Moorhen, Bullfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 seen but 2 heard, 6 Pheasants 4m and 2 f in field between canal and railway line (Paul Rigg).

13th January A f Blackcap in a garden this morning at Grange Farm Court, Woodsetts (Nigel Butler).

12th January At Langold Lake, which was completely frozen apart from c150 square metres were 11 Moorhen, 66 Mallard, 75 Coot, 6 Tufted Duck, c100 Black-headRoche Abbeyed Gull, 1 Common Gull, 3 Great Black-backed Gull >N, 19 Robin, 2 Nuthatch, 1 Brambling and 10 Chaffinch (Brian Chambers). 3 Jays at Lindrick Golf Course, plus 15-20 Long-tailed Tit, 15 Siskin and a Grey Wagtail by the canal. The Mandarin is reported to be back on the Chesterfield Canal, east of Turnerwood (Nigel Butler).

10th January Noon at Dinnington Marsh produced Jay, 26 Fieldfare, 4 Woodcock & 2 Tawny Owl (one asleep with wings fanned around to keep warm). Roche Abbey revealed 3 Buzzard, 22 Teal, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Goldcrest & Tawny Owl. Langold Lake held Brambling & Snipe. Feeding in a garden on Lakeland Drive were 35 Fieldfare & 4 Redwing (John Gallagher). A m Blackcap feeding on grapes in a Rackford Road garden (Farrell Kent). 20 House Sparrow in a Throapham garden (Andy Hirst).

9th January An early morning walk along the Chesterfield Canal; South Anston to Turner Wood produced 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Green Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, 3 Marsh Tit, 3 Willow Tit, 3 Coal Tit, 26 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Treecreepers, 3 Tree Sparrows,13 Siskin, 29 Chaffinch, Grey Wagtail, 2 Mute Swan and a Little Grebe (Mick Clay). At NAPT were 14 Grey Partridge, Green Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Snipe, & Grey Wagtail (John Gallagher). 4 Bullfinch and a Grey Wagtail by Lindrick Golf Course and Chesterfield Canal (Nigel Butler). In a Throapham garden were 14 Blackbirds coming to food (Andy Hirst).Also a large raptor, which was definitelty not a Buzzard reported over S Anston today (Phil Broadhead).

Laughton Church8th January A walk from Laughton to Stone and back produced 200 Woodpigeon along Eastfield Lane, plus 4 Buzzard, Mute Swan >NW, Willow Tit & 2 Bullfinch. Kings Wood produced c20 Hare, 4 Roe Deer, 40 Red-legged Partridge, at least 4 Nuthatch, 3 Marsh Tit, 15 Long-tailed Tits and a Sparrowhawk. Around Roche Abbey were a staggering 64 Teal, 4 Mallard, 2 Marsh Tit, 2 Siskin and a Great Spotted Woodpecker, plus 2 Buzzard. Over Stubbings Wood were c20 Chaffinch and Brambling feeding in game cover (Andy Hirst).

Tommy Flockton's Marsh held 2 Lapwing and single Snipe. The Chesterfield Canal between Norwood Tunnel and Stiff's produced 4 Moorhen, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 9 Mallard, Kestrel, 6 Siskin and a Coal Tit (Brian Chambers). Of note was a Raven flying out of SK58 over the Sandbeck Estate at Blythgate Lane (Stuart Davenport-Lound Bird Club).

7th January A walk around a snowbound Lindrick Golf Course produced amongst other records 9 Blackbird; 1 Coal Tit, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Jay, 2 Mistle Thrush & 27 Fieldfare (Brian Chambers).

1st January m Blackcap in a North Anston Garden today (Chris Lilley). Kingfisher at NAPT. At Thurcroft Pit Top 2 m and 1 f Stonechat and at Brampton Common, 2 Buzzard (Mick Clay). A f Goshawk was observed in the square today (J O'Malley).

30th December 1-2 Brambling at Letwell Sewage Works, with c70 Yellowhammer, 4-5 Reed Bunting, c20 Chaffinch. At Roche Abbey were 19 Teal, 20 Mallard and 2 Moorhen, plus Kingfisher (John Gallagher, Mick Clay, Andy Hirst, Geoff Facer & Andy Murray).

29th December Early morning over Axle Lane were 89 Pink-footed Geese >W (Mick Clay).

27th December Late afternoon at Axle Lane were 300 Golden Plover, 350 Starling and 36 Fieldfare (Mick Clay).

26th December At Axle Lane today were 200 Skylark, 41 Fieldfare and 9 Redwing >SW. Late afternoon at NAPT was a Woodcock and a very pale Common Buzzard at Dinnington Marsh (Mick Clay).

25th December 2 Woodcock in Hawks Wood this morning (Mick Clay).

24th December At Letwell Sewage Works today was a120 strong flock of mainly Yellowhammer with Reed Bunting, A few Chaffinch, Greenfinch & 2 f Brambling (John Gallagher).

23rd December c250 Fieldfare at Dewidales, 2 Little Grebe on Lindrick Dale pond and at Harry Crofts were 14 Grey Partridge, 7 Red-legged Partridge and 3 Fieldfare (Geoff Facer). At Thurcroft Marsh today were Woodcock, Water Rail, Green Woodpecker, Snipe & Buzzard (John Gallagher).

22nd December 10:00 at Axle Lane produced f Merlin unsuccessfully hunting Skylarks (John Gallagher).

At Langold Lake, which was 90% frozen were single Grey Wagtail, 39 Mallard, 38 Tufted Duck, 5 Moorhen, 2 Mute Swan, 13 Gadwall, 75 Coot, 5 Great Crested Grebe and single Teal. Kings Wood Corner was quiet with just 20 Skylark, 4 Buzzard, 20 Black-headed Gull, single Common Gull, 200 Woodpigeon and 3 Herring Gull >S.

Brown Bailey's was equally frozen & quiet with 2 Marsh Tit, 13 Coot & single Mallard. Carlton Lake held 3 Moorhen, 15 Black-headed Gull and a pair of Gadwall. The large finch flock was still present at Oldcotes with c500 birds present, The majority were Linnet c300, with 150 Goldfinch-the rest Greenfinch, Chaffinch and Yellowhammer-but the snow storm hit reducing visibility to a few feet. At Carlton in Lindrick 30 Lapwing over, and on Eastfield Lane c700 corvids, mostly Rook (Andy Hirst).
