Lake remains mostly frozen, despite this; 2m & 1f Pochard,
1m Shoveler & 1 pair of Gadwall present.
Also Tawny Owl calling from western end. At Firbeck were
230 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag Goose &
1 Green Woodpecker (Geoff & Lyn Facer).
Further counts at Langold Lake produced 60 Mallard, 85
Coot, 11 Moorhen, m Shoveler 2
m& 1 f Pochard, 2 Mute Swan, 3 Nuthatch,
3 Siskin. Plus lots of Rook, Crow
& Jackdaw, c 400 in total. Woodpigeon

260 Pink-footed Geese W> over Dinnington at 15:00 (John
Gallagher), with a further 150 >NW over South Anston at 16:15
(Mick Clay).
27th December Langold Lake produced 100 Greenfinch, 6 Brambling, 2 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Coal Tit, 7 Nuthatch, 5 Treecreeper, 7 Goldcrest, Jay, 3 Green Woodpecker, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Buzzard. At Thwaite House Farm Pond were 5 Snipe & 9 Red-legged Partridge (John Gallagher). Wigeon @ Turnerwood © John Gallagher 24th December In Lindrick Dale were 18 Tufted Duck, 16 Mallard, 3 Little Grebe, 4 Gadwall, 10 Moorhen and 9 Coot. On the Chesterfield Canal at Turnerwood were 2 Jay, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker plus Cormorant, Snipe & Wigeon (John Gallagher).

Feeding the birds at Langold Lake produced 2 Treereeper,
80 Greenfinch on sunflower crop along with 200 Rooks

At least 15 Waxwings in a garden on High Street, South
Anston at 12:05, which then went > W into the estate (Mick Clay).
18th December 150 Pink-footed Geese >W over South Anston at 12:00. At Axle Lane were 71 Skylark and 5 Song Thrush (Mick Clay). At Roche Abbey were Grey Wagtail, 5 Greylag Geese >N, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 15 Teal (displaying) 3 Coal Tit, 2 Marsh Tit, Tawny Owl, Gadwall, 23 Mallard, 2 Heron, 7 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper, 3 Goldcrest, 5 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 2 Mistle Thrush, 4 Jay and 5 Bullfinch. On Thwaite House Farm Pond were 3 Snipe (John Gallagher). 10 Waxwings around Magnolia Close, South Anston early
morning. (Andy Murray). At 10:15 NAPT held c25 Waxwings,
which flew towards Church Lane, Dinnington. Also 1 Redshank in
stream close to the Church Lane entrance (Geoff Facer). 7th December Waxwing calling in fog and Little Grebe coming to bread at Turnerwood (Bob Stevens). 8 Red-legged Partridge coming to seed in a Throapham garden this morning (Andy Hirst).

A walk down Rackford Lane to Lindrick, back Via Anston Stones Wood produced 4 Kestrel, single Buzzard, 4 Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, c30 Fieldfare, a flock c70 Chaffinch, c25 Lapwing over, 5 Golden Plover plus 3 Jay (Andy Murray). 26th November At Brown Bailey's today were 1m and 7f Goosander (Alan Bradford). 24th November At Langold Lake today were 34 Tufted Duck, 80 Black-headed Gull, 260 Canada Geese, 58 Gadwall, 24 Moorhen, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Pochard, 2 Teal, 2 Wigeon, 2 Mute Swan, Heron, 80 Coot, 35 Siskin, and a probable 6 Whooper Swans circled over over the car park before heading off >S (Alan Bradford). 21st November A party of c20? & new pair of Mute Swans, which have ousted
the resident single Mute Swan. Carlton Lake held 2 imm.

Clay). 14th November At NAPT today were 21 Mallard, 4 Lapwing, 2 Pied Wagtail, 2 Green Woodpecker, Skylark, 6 Black-headed Gull, 12 Goldfinch, 3 Meadow Pipit, 10 Blackbird, 6 Redwing, 3 Dunnock, 4 Wren, Blue Tit, Bullfinch & Jack Snipe in overflow field. At Langold Lake today were 109 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon,
5 Great Crested Grebe, Kingfisher, 3 Kestrel
and 2 Buzzard (Mick Clay). 7th November 5 Buzzard from Kings Wood Corner this afternoon. Letwell Sewage Works held 50 Yellowhammer, 10 Greenfinch, 4 Reed Bunting, 3 Song Thrush and a Buzzard over. Lingodell produced 69 Lapwing, Buzzard, 189 Black-headed Gull and a Common Gull (Andy Hirst & John Gallagher). 5th November
Along the Chesterfield Canal were single Brambling with
a flock of c65 Chaffinch feeding in a ploughed field near
Turnerwood. 6 Tree Sparrow on the feeders in a Turnerwood
Garden, c20 Goldfinch around the Turnerwood area. 1 Little
Grebe near Toplocks, 56 Mallard between Shireoaks
and Kiveton Bridge, 7 Siskin at Stiff's and 2 Marsh
Tit between Turnerwood and Hawk's Wood (Brian Chambers). 31st October A foggy start at NAPT produced 2 Golden Plover on the top plateau, plus 14 Grey Partridge and 6 Snipe, with Brambling over and 2 Grey Wagtail. Langold Lake held 130 Coot, 39 Mallard, 8 Tufted Duck, a record breaking 146 Gadwall, 15 Moorhen, 6 Great Crested Grebe, single Mute Swan and Wigeon. Hodsock produced 54 and 134 Pink-footed Geese >N and >SW, 100 Black-headed Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 100 Meadow Pipit, 7 Tree Sparrow, Lesser Redpoll >S and 30 Fieldfare >SW (Andy Hirst). Stubble at Thorpe Salvin produced c100+ Skylark, 2 Buzzard, 13 Grey Partridge and c400 Woodpigeon (Mick Clay and Andy Hirst). A site within the square produced a single Long-eared Owl (Andy Hirst and Mick Clay)-although the highlight of the weekend was an adult Yellow-legged Gull at Lingodell (John O'Malley and Mick Clay), with a probable immature bird also. 2 Little Owl at the end of Rackford Lane again (Dave Thornley). 30th October 2 Little Owl at the end of Rackford Lane (Dave Thornley). 27th October At Roche Abbey today were 70 Fieldfare, 4 Marsh Tit, c20 Long-tailed Tit, 6 Bullfinch, 20 Siskin, 24 Teal and 2 Jay over (Andy Hirst). NAPT produced 10 Song Thrush, 7 Blackbird, 2 Chiffchaff, 34 Black-headed Gull, 8 Skylark >S, 5 Bullfinch, 32 Goldfinch, Grey Wagtail, Buzzard, Grey Partridge and 6 Siskin >S. From Stone village, a walk towards Kings Wood produced 3 Kestrel, 3 Buzzard, Little Owl , 100+ Rooks in large flock on newly ploughed field. 2 small flocks of Long-tailed Tits near the footbridge over Maltby Beck along with several Dunnocks, Robins and Great Tits (Brian Waugh). 9th March Early morning at Axle Lane produced 37 Whooper Swans >N, also 85 Golden Plover and good numbers of Skylark (Mick Clay). 10:00-13:00 A dog walk around Langold Lake and through Dyscarr Woods produced (despite the presence of a film crew) 2 Tree Sparrows, 4 Chaffinch, 6 Robin & 6 Great Crested Grebe (Brian Waugh). A walk around Thurcroft Pit Top produced 3m Reed Bunting, 1 pair of Mallard, 10 Woodpigeon & 1 Hare. On the path to & from Carr were a pair of Chaffinch, f Bullfinch, 2 Robin, 2m Blackbird. In Carr village were 2 Kestrel & a Buzzard harassed by Carrion Crow (Paul Rigg).
Red-necked Grebe @ Langold Lake © Brian Waugh Large numbers of Canada Geese. 30-40 Fieldfares in grassland at the side of the lake and two Mistle Thrush mixed in. 30 + Goldfinch flock on Alders, 12 Long-tailed Tits and 3 Kestrels. Lots of Robins Blue Tits and Great Tits, Blackbirds also in good numbers (Brian Waugh). Mid morning at the top end of Carlton Lake were 3 pairs of Goosander, they flew off towards Langold Lake (Keith Naylor).
Barn Owl @ NAPT © Paul Rigg At Langold Lake the Red-necked Grebe was entertaining several visiting birders. Carlton Lake held 4 pairs of Goosander. Over Brampton were 6 Buzzard. NAPT held a f Stonechat, large number of Reed Bunting here (8), 24 Black-headed Gull on scrape with 2 Common Gull (Mick Clay, Andy Hirst & Brian Chambers). A Little Ringed Plover put in a brief appearance here early morning (Andy Hirst & Andy Murray). Late afternoon at Thurcroft Pit Top was a single Little Ringed Plover-may well have been the NAPT bird from earlier (John O'Malley). 6th March An ad Long-eared Owl was found in an emaciated state at Thurcroft Pit Top. It was picked up and taken to the vets at Dinnington. Unfortunately it was too far gone and died on the table. Also on Thurcroft Pit Top were 5 Reed Bunting, 4 Meadow Pipit, 6 Skylark, 2 m Stonechat, Green Sandpiper & 3 Snipe. Perched on the island, it then flew into a nearby field, before flying around the trees in an attempt to roost, where it was lost from view. Firbeck was quiet with 2 Greylag Geese >S, 15 Herring Gull >N, Siskin, Heron, 2 Buzzard and Sparrowhawk Thornbury Hill was equally dull & quiet with 4 Buzzard the highlight. Little Grebe and 18 Teal were the high points at Roche Abbey, with Grey Wagtail, 2 Buzzard 23 Mallard and 6 Moorhen also present (Andy Hirst). 13th February At Kiveton Pit Top today were 2 Willow Tit, 6 Skylark, f Sparrowhawk, 3 Greylag Geese, 15 Mallard, 5 Chaffinch & 2 Reed Bunting. In the Kings Wood/ Lingodell area were 2 Brambling amongst the many Chaffinch. 100 Pink-footed Geese over N. Anston at 10:20 (John Gallagher) and what were probably the same 100 Pink-footed Geese over South Anston (Mick Clay). Over Thornbury Hill this morning were 8 Buzzard, plus Tawny Owl calling. Late pm produced a f Shoveler at a 90% frozen NAPT (Geoff Facer). At a site at dusk were single hunting Long-eared Owl and Woodcock (Andy Murray & Andy Hirst). A Little Owl at Carr this morning. At Carlton Lake were Kingfisher & Sparrowhawk. Lingodell held Little Owl, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 240 Fieldfare & 20 Redwing (John Gallagher). Late afternoon at NAPT was a Woodcock and a very pale Common Buzzard at Dinnington Marsh (Mick Clay). 25th December 2 Woodcock in Hawks Wood this morning (Mick Clay). 24th December At Letwell Sewage Works today was a120 strong flock of mainly Yellowhammer with Reed Bunting, A few Chaffinch, Greenfinch & 2 f Brambling (John Gallagher). 23rd December c250 Fieldfare at Dewidales, 2 Little Grebe on Lindrick Dale pond and at Harry Crofts were 14 Grey Partridge, 7 Red-legged Partridge and 3 Fieldfare (Geoff Facer). At Thurcroft Marsh today were Woodcock, Water Rail, Green Woodpecker, Snipe & Buzzard (John Gallagher). 22nd December 10:00 at Axle Lane produced f Merlin unsuccessfully hunting Skylarks (John Gallagher).
Andy Hirst in the snow at Oldcotes © Andy Hirst Brown Bailey's was equally frozen & quiet with 2 Marsh Tit, 13 Coot & single Mallard. Carlton Lake held 3 Moorhen, 15 Black-headed Gull and a pair of Gadwall. The large finch flock was still present at Oldcotes with c500 birds present, The majority were Linnet c300, with 150 Goldfinch-the rest Greenfinch, Chaffinch and Yellowhammer-but the snow storm hit reducing visibility to a few feet. At Carlton in Lindrick 30 Lapwing over, and on Eastfield Lane c700 corvids, mostly Rook (Andy Hirst). |
